He's talking about Sling TV, PS Vue, and DirectTV Now. Those are the big-three streaming services aimed at "cord cutters". All have ESPN available in some form or fashion I believe.

False. I pay for only Internet and do not have access to any ESPN content unless it is only streamed on watchespn.

It really impressive how fast they've fallen. Seems like maybe just a decade ago I used to watch some of their programing and look at their website.

Ah. When I hear "cord-cutters" I generally thought of people who eschewed "packaged" services altogether for more "a la carte" viewing--not just those who went for internet vice traditional cable providers. Most of the guys I know who gave up cable don't pay for live-streaming. They just have the big movie/premium television providers.

Thanks for clarification.

ETA: What the heck is SlingTV. I remember Sling Boxes from when I was stationed in Germany and Bahrain. Do they have a streaming service now?

I believe you can get ESPN streaming service on Roku, but I'm not sure.

I had a job and watched espn.

I still have a job and don't watch espn anymore. And I don't work as hard as I used to.

I don't watch espn anymore because it is no longer what it used to be: about sports and an enjoyable pastime where we could get away from pain in the arse subjects like political opinion, preaching, social and political agendas.

Now it's agenda driven. And that's why I turned it off.
same here. Add me to the list

I've never looked (no longer as much a sports fan) but are you talking services like Apple TV and Hulu (don't have).

No, the streaming cable services like SlingTV, PSVue, DirectTVNow, etc. There is no standalone for ESPN like the CBS All Access deal.

You can access ESPN via the WatchESPN app but you have to have login credentials from a provider so still have to have service in order to use it on its own.

All three of those I mentioned are pretty much the same. They offer "packages" of channels streamed over your base internet connection. It's not truly a la carte, but there are multiple price points and package options, and they all come in much cheaper than cable. There is a good bit of channel overlap with all three, but there are certain channels you can get on one service that you might not be able to get on the others (based on agreements with the stations I'd assume.)

I'm looking at all three right now, but am leaning towards PS Vue. Honestly the deciding factor will be making sure the lady of the house still has access to her favorite chick flick channels

ETA: junkfunky beat me to it. Also major props to the Tech Board for getting me started down the streaming journey

Not entirely true. I, and many others like me, used to watch sportscenter every morning at breakfast, and watch it before bed at night.

I used to watch college gameday nearly every saturday.

Once they stopped showing highlights and started focusing on "so and so said blank on twitter!" (usually Tim Tebow or Tony Romo), who's in trouble with the law or the commissioner, and talking about bs political issues, I stopped watching. Once they started just covering athletes like celebrities instead of talking about the game, I started cutting back my consumption.

Now, I almost never watch ESPN except during college football broadcasts, and I watch far fewer games than I used to.

There are millions like me. It's not all chord cutters.

Yeah I had ESPN360 then ESPN3 then WatchESPN when I lived in Germany and Bahrain from 2009-2014. Lifesavers. I was eventually able to get an "ESPNAmerica" through my German cable provider.

I may have to migrate over before I get booted off the site again.

and any time I give them a chance with something non-live sports they piss me off within 15 minutes so the span between those attempts is longer and longer

So fewer people are in the workforce and you think time available for sports viewing has decreased?

Not in the least. Total hours spent watching sports has likely increased. People seek out other venues to watch sports either due to political differences or dislike of ESPN.

Also there has been a proliferation of competitors most of whom don't do politics as much.

While most companies offer cable services and internet they are different entities from a utility standpoint. Your ISP credentials give you access to most of the content not on one of ESPN's tv channels but your cable/satellite provider credentials give you access to the tv channel content as well.

I believe you guys. Just seemed that coord cutting probably accounted for more of that drop in revenue than disaffected consumers. Could be that I'm wrong. I didn't run any numbers and wasn't aware that they have broader streaming options than the overseas ones that I referenced a couple of posts ago.

ESPN360/ESPN3 was also a lifesaver

Trust me, chord cutting is a major factor. In fact, I would say the tabloidization and policizing of sports is likely one of the factors driving chord cutting.

They are not going to go anywhere. What they have done is get away from news and X's and O's and gone more of the route of FNC and CNN with talking heads instead. People will still watch ESPN because it is there only option for sports that don't serve fish and chips at the concession stand. While I don't watch it because they replaced sports with OTL and X's and O's with human interest stories, I think cutting the cord is the real reason for their revenue decline.
