RE: why WNBA players don't get overpaid as much NBA players. Yes we've been saying this forever.

Cliffs: "Your pay should be proportionate to the revenue that you generate."

Reasonable evaluation.

Really old clip of Ronda, back when I first remember seeing some woke media people infiltrating MMA, and they were not happy about her answers. They thought they were going to get some 'you go girl' type of stuff from her and it didn't happen.

Woke media then went nuts during covid as Dana kept the business going, never missed payroll, and found a way to put on events.

Is it also "reasonable" to ask whether the PTB see the WNBA as a "loss leader," designed to bring females into the broader "basketball" fanbase and to generate revenue not DIRECTLY related to their games?

The grocery store is not making a profit on that $0.15 two-liter bottle of Coke Zero. They are selling it at that price to get you in the door, so they can make a profit selling you OTHER stuff.

Ignoring this possibility is VERY shallow analysis.

It’s seems if all women were worried about these salaries, they would all follow these sports. After all there are more women than men. Just follow the sports and the rating will go up along with the salaries.

I’m a small sample size but I don’t know any women who watch the WNBA. Know some who like the college game but no pro fans.

It is a loss leader for the NBA but it has been around for around 20 years and has very little traction.

The problem with it being a loss leader is that people have ZERO sympathy for the players bitching about pay and benefits in comparison to the men.

If this were a fledgling league looking to bring in talent they may have a point. But as of now they are a very established league which few people give a shite about, meaning that there isn’t much of a reason to keep throwing good money after bad.

I think I know one person who watches it and she is a lesbian. Which fits the known demographics of their audience.

No, sir. I am objectively examining both sides of an issue.

Or, like many, I could just type "rrreeeeeeeeeee."

Except the WNBA isn't drawing anyone. The NBA doesn't need the WNBA, at all.

I hope that tight rope you are trying to walk is over a very shallow ditch.

Your rebuttal to that 'shallow analysis' makes it look like the Grand Canyon.

And I've never seen a 15 cent two-liter bottle of anything - certainly not a Coca Cola.

When you have to manufacture such a big stretch to serve as your 'rebuttal example' - you know you are sucking wind.

Need to take a rest and cut this one loose.

After 25 years, it totally failed if that was the objective.

Womens sports suck, except for very few exceptions. No one is watching.

Exactly. It subsidized it because women are petty and loud.

Extremely poor take. A loss leader is used to sale other products. Fans of basketball already watch the NBA. New fans to WNBA are coming on board because they want to watch women. That is not going to bring them to the NBA.

The known demographics of their audience": actually, according to the NBA's commissioner, females of any dynamics are not supporting the WNBA. He said : " odd enough, we've found that the average fan is men of various ages. Females are disappointedly not supporting the League".

You had it right the first time Hanky. The WNBA as a loss leader is taking a giant leap in logic, assuming that the WNBA brings anything of value to the NBA. I'd be fine with both leagues going broke, so I would be perfectly happy if they bankrupted the NBA propping up the WNBA.

I think it is a virtue signaler for the NBA.

A "loss leader" accomplishes something useful.
