Black Americans make up 13.6% of U.S. population.
Black students made up 11.3% of matriculants (first-year students) in 2021.
White Americans make up 75.8% of U.S. population.
White students made up 51.2% of matriculants.
Seems like the population that is disproportionately under represented is not the same identified in article.

I finished medical school 30 years ago and my class was over 50% female.
People need to shut up with the “patriarchy” within medicine. That bridge was burned in the 1980’s.
As far as race goes, it does not matter. There is such a steep learning curve that most people can’t get through it all. The MCAT is designed to ensure that at least 95% of entering students don’t flunk out. Race has nothing to do with capacity for learning.
Don’t even get me started on the new “pass/fail” standards in medical school. I have a child in medical school right now and it’s infuriating.
They take a quiz and get a grade. Then they retake the same test in a small group (where they discuss the answers) and they get another grade. Those two grades are averaged to determine each students final grade.
My child usually scores above 95% on their own. But the “group” won’t listen to the correct answers and they collectively vote to write an incorrect answer down. Then my child’s grade gets averaged down 5-10 points each time.
Guess who is the most stubborn and usually the most wrong in the group? It’s always the black females trying to prove how intelligent they are.
I am warning you now - stay away from any minority physician (especially female) in the future unless you have a clear HIGH recommendation from someone you respect.
It’s not racism. It’s dangerous.

This is sickening.

Well tell your kid to be more stubborn. I had to deal with that crap too but wouldn’t take no for an answer

Also to expand on your female make up of the class line, med school from my understanding has been 50/50 for quite a while. The reason there’s more males than females in practice is because most women quit medicine when they start a family (honestly wish I could lol)

It’s a majority vote. No matter how stubborn she is - the group “voted” in the answer.

Affirmative action is pretty much going to be ruled unconstitutional within the next 5 months so it should mostly be a level playing field after that point.
"Affirmative action" was essentially ruled unconstitutional 30 years ago. It was at that time they changed the name of "affirmative action" to “diversity.“ Before that, soon after the Bakke decision ruled that quotas were unconstitutional, they had changed the name from quotas to affirmative action.
The point is, the administrators at these schools will never stop. They’ll keep coming up with another name and justification to keep in practice the racist institution that was once known as quotas, then affirmative action, then diversity.

We held back blacks from education and wonder why they are so behind. That being said, pushing them to the front isn't a good idea

Who's "we"?
And, when did "we" do this exactly?

Obviously it wasn't allowed during slavery. Desegregation allowed them into white schools and perceivably having access to the same quality education. Education is something that builds over time and many generations. There is a huge gap there

Someone should tell that to the Asians.
Do you think maybe that there are so many black on Asian violent crimes because they destroy racist narratives like the one you just stated?

There has been a trend in higher education, particularly medical education, towards "minimizing" standardized tests. This article lays it all on the feet of "diversity," but there is a huge component of this centered on "stress" and "mental health." For example, Step 1 of the medical boards used to be the most important test you ever take in medicine...I'd argue more impactful than the MCAT. The score would essentially decide your ability to compete for a residency spot at a top institution or a competitive specialty. Last year, they changed Step 1 to pass/fail, because the test was "too stressful" to students and caused anxiety. This is where we are now as a society. People are just becoming soft, and we are allowing it.

Every step of the admissions process has been designed to keep me and other individuals underrepresented in medicine, including Black and Latinx applicants, out of medical school.
This mindset infuriates me. It invalidates and questions the hard work of many black doctors out there who don't need any advantages to compete. Life is not always fair, but this defeatist mentality hurts your own people more than he realizes.

By 1950 the literacy gap had almost closed.
By comparison, S. Korea had a 22% literacy rate in 1945, and it was 87% by 1970. The issue isn't education.\

I think the gap pertains to buying in. Black folks don't see as much of a benefit from formal education as others, from their perspective..

The MCAT tests actual scientific knowledge. And if you don’t have this basic scientific knowledge, you have no business going to medical school.
I wouldn't go that far. The MCAT is just another standardized test. A vast majority of the tested material you will never need to know to be a doctor.

I do. Step 2 will be the new Step 1.
