“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

You know what was hypocritical? A nation that had the phrase "all men are created equal" in its founding documents yet didn't treat all men equal for nearly 200 years of its existence.

Is this annual gathering of insecure David Vitter voters who pretend to give a shite about MLK's infidelity? I swear, I never thought 'white fragility' was a real thing until I looked at this board.

"ermagerd! a black man is being feted by the media! better run to the internet to register muh feelings!"

I have always thought of MLK day as celebrating more than the man. It celebrates the relatively peaceful gain of civil rights by an oppressed minority.

Compare to years of violence in South Africa, the horrendous tribal strife across much of Africa, Palestine, the plights of the Kurds and Baha’is’, Chechnya, etc. Many, many places were far worse. Yes we had murders of civil right activists and church bombings, but that violence could have been much worse had a more violent rights movement for African Americans come to the fore.

As far as the Communist accusation goes, just think how things would have shaken out had the Black Panthers been the main African American equal right proponents instead of the non-violent King. The Communists would have thrived. With King, Communist influence was nearly nil. You had the Weather Underground which was a flash in the pan and fairly easy to suppress.

(I believe that charge was leveled by segregationists back in the 1960's)

As imperfect a person as King was, we can celebrate the victory for justice he helped to channel constructively.

Depends on who is the judge of that.

Most great Americans are completely unsung.

If you couldn't tell, the latter clearly bothers people here. It could be named fricking Rosa Parks day and they would furiously try to dig up something negative about her. Rosa Parks was a communist! Rosa Parks cheated in school!

I agree. There's no denying what MLK did for civil rights. He came at a time that the country needed him most.

I just think that reality needs to be put into perspective sometimes. Many of his policies could have been severely damaging to the country and his personal adulterous acts are the same that plague many black communities to this day.

I always find it alarming when "conservatives" hurl "anti-war" as an epithet.

Thats nice. Maybe you are being suckered? The "anti-war" movement is a cover for spreading communist ideology. Don't you find it odd that the whole anti-war movement disappeared when war monger Obama was in office?
Why do you suppose that is?

My former wife's grandfather was one of his bodyguards before he hit it big time.

I don't know. I have a pretty strong opinion that we shouldn't judge historical figures off today's morality standards.

I don't agree with the current belief that we should change Columbus Day.
