He didn't. Biden was polling better than Hillary in all the swing states were looking at this year. Look at the real clear politics site and those state polls.

In 2020 there wasn’t as much excitement and enthusiasm as there is this year. Covid was on the minds of most people so the election was secondary.

Trump had historic support.was down 5-7 % but we knew he’d do better. Victory was expected. And election eve it was all going so well… and then we slept…and…

Most thought there was no way Biden could win cause he never left his basement......polls favored Biden if I recall.
