Because, damn it I hate cutting grass and washing my car!

Seriously tho, the whole African continent were dealing in slavery. It probably felt similarly to today's farmers using their illegals for labor, without the beatings of course.

One of the comments in the Reddit thread said 1/3 of southerners had slaves. Which seemed like an impossible number.

Did anyone on Reddit mention the fact that the last US president to have owned a slave was...

... wait for it ...

Ulysses S. Grant.

Interesting, huh?

I’ve never heard of any reason for secession that was not connected to slavery. Y’all always want to separate that. It’s like a news story of a guy beating his wife for not having dinner ready on time and y’all argue “What? You expect him to starve to death?

Or it could be we don't want to be blamed for something we had nothing to do with. I don't know about you but I've never owned a slave in my life and have nothing to feel guilty about

Southern pride is an interesting topic in itself. You don’t see that type of pride for a region anywhere else in the USA. Pride for a state or a city or town is common. New York and Texas come to mind. Pride in being an American is standard. Just a strong pride in a region is only found in the former confederate states.

Do northerners feel guilty about their ancestors bombarding and killing innocent women and children in Vicksburg, Charleston, Mobile and countless other cities? Do they feel guilty about Sherman purposely starving innocent women and children by destroying their farms?

Northerners aren't taught the horrors southern civilians endured at the hands of Northerners during and after the war. We know it because it has been passed down through generations.

guilt? no

shame? most assuredly

i am reminded every day what an awful scourge my ancestors (if not my direct kin) wrought upon this nation by relying on African slavery

we would be so much better off if it had never happened

Slave ownership in the south has many fantasy numbers posted online as high as 30%, 40%, 47%.

The real number far lower.

I have gone over the Bullock county Alabama records in 1860; there are few slave owners.

None of my relatives going into the Civil War owned a slave and they fought for North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

If the government ever starts issuing reparations checks to blacks, that is the day I stop pay taxes.

The only people owed reparations in this country are white people

Simple. We weren’t around back then. frick off.

Go to an Oktoberfest in Germany. You think they’re walking around with their heads down? Get over it.

Reddit is like The View. Just a gathering of fricking dumb asses.

None of my ancestors came to the United States before 1860, so I nor my ancestors had nothing to do with it. So I have no guilt.

Obviously one of the greatest what if's, he would have taken the high ground on the left, who knows then.

I know if Jackson could have taken over for Bragg and he cut Forrest loose with the full Cavalry arm in the west they would have been in Ohio in a few Months. Jackson would have absolutely destroyed Rosecrans.

Ask if democrats feel guilty for slavery or Japanese internment.

But you would probably get banned.

Reparations is one of the more ridiculous political schemes in modern history. Imagine all the atrocities throughout history that would require financial atonement under that standard?

Don't care.

Any 'reparations' that are paid will just be wasted and put back into the economy making the so called 'oppressors' even richer and these idiots don't understand that. I have ZERO guilt for anything that happened 100, 200, 300, or 400 years ago. One could look at interracial violent crime and violent crime statistics and make some very direct questions to the 'Reddit' crowds questions as well. Flip the script on these morons and discuss current day not something from 200 years ago.

Im of Irish decent. My ancestors were brought over to do the jobs to dangerous for slaves. Losing a slave was a loss of investment money. An Irishman not so much.

The older I get, the less patriotic I feel. I think the South is an occupied country. The majority of Confederate soldiers fought because they were invaded. The ideals of the founding fathers were found on the side fighting for state rights.
