Ranking the Baton Rouge Mayors over the past 50 years… How would you rank them?

Woody Dumas
Pat Screen
Tom Ed McHugh
Bobby Simpson
Kip Holden
Sharon Weston Broome
I admittedly don’t know much about Woody except my dad always saying in disgust “If others wouldn’t Woody would.” Pat Screen is so often associated with his failure in Catfish Town, but I do remember him being passionate about Baton Rouge as well as some white powder substance, which I kind of feel bad for the man in a lot of respects because I think his heart was in the right place. Tom Ed probably tops my list as being a decent mayor in jobs and industry in particular. Bobby Simpson was way over his head, and did pretty much nothing as far as I’m concerned but put the party in a negative light. Kip Holden was the real surprise of the bunch. I didn’t vote for him the first go around, but I did vote for both of his reelections. I think Kip really cared about all of BR and did a good job for BR as mayor. I’d put him up there with Tom Ed if I’m being fair. And that brings me to the real cellar dweller of them all in SWB, who I think went out of her way to hurt this city and fill it with cronies and people who let BR sink to the pits in crime and overall living conditions. This is why Sid has his work cut out for him in righting this ship. He’s going to need everyone’s help and prayers.

This. Pat and Tom Ed are 3a and 3b to me though since they both just put everything on autopilot for 20 fricking years.

ETA: My bad, OP. List is chronological.

Ligthen up Francis. I think the OP is just listing them from oldest to most recent.

It was a chronological list of Baton Rouge mayors, not a list of who I think was best.

Early on, Screen actually had ideas and vison to make Baton Rouge a thriving growing place commensurate with similar Sunbelt cities of its size at the time. He was wrestling too many demons to be able to bring it to fruition.
Tom Ed was a good competent man, but he could never get beyond a sort of 'small town' mentality in anything he did.
Both were probably the smartest guys to be mayor in the past 50 years, but neither could really succeed because of their respective hang-ups.
Woody Dumas may be actually the worst because he lacked any vision beyond a small town mentality at the one time when Baton Rouge was growing the most and possibly poised to be a truly thriving vibrant place.

Kip will always be my #1. I have a personal story about him. My whole family does. My cousin was killed by an IED in Afghanistan. The funeral service was on a Saturday morning at 9AM. After it was over and I was walking out, I noticed Kip was walking to the parking lot, by himself. I told my uncle, and he said that he had been in the back, alone. He had sat through the entire service, given his condolences to my aunt and uncle, and did all of this with no one else with him. No media coverage. He came to a citizen soldier's funeral early on a rainy Saturday morning, a young man whom he had never met, and didn't do it for how good it would make him look. Me and my family have held him in pretty high regard for that.

Mayor Jack Christian pretty much decided the route of I-10/I-110 through Baton Rouge including the Washington St. exit debacle.

Funny how this racist GOP slanted board is almost universally putting a black Democrat as the best mayor of BR in the last 50 years.

How many of the mayors listed were born inside of the Baton Rouge city limits?

Honestly…
Kip did things. He’s #1.
Broome destroyed things. She’s last.
The others didn’t particularly distinguish themselves.

I made the horrendous mistake for voting for Bobby Simpson over Kip the first go round. His administration was the first time a Republican let me down (but most certainly wasn't the last). It was followed up though by the first time I voted for a Dem in the next election - and that Democrat was Kip Holden.
I practically actively campaigned for Kip in the 2004 election. At the time I was dating a girl who worked for WJBO and she had to go to Bobby's election party to cover it. He was absolutely shocked he'd lost and wasn't being very pleasant in defeat. However it ushered in the last golden age we'd seen here until now hopefully with Sid.
I'm pretty excited for our future here and I haven't said that in a long time.

Simpson doesn't even deserve a mention here

Kip believed BR could be a great city and really tried to make it one. He's probably the last Democrat many in EBR have ever voted for.
The many costumes of Kip:

On a side note: I remember hearing about it, but why did Pat commit suicide? I don't remember.

My cousin was BRPD killed in the line of duty. Kip came to the funeral and knew every family member by name. He spent the entire time talking to the family and spent 0 time with reporters or anyone else that wasn't Police or fire. The hurt in his eyes could clearly be seen. I'll never forget that interaction. I have to go with Kip even though Tom Ed was my father's best friend
