quote:

In the initiative’s introductory passage, Draper argues that “vast parts of California are poorly served by a representative government dominated by a large number of elected representatives from a small part of our state, both geographically and economically.”
The proposal aims to invoke Article IV, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, the provision guiding how an existing state can be divided into new states. Draper’s plan calls for three new entities — Northern California, California and Southern California — which would roughly divide the population of the existing state into thirds.
Northern California would consist of 40 counties stretching from Oregon south to Santa Cruz County, then east to Merced and Mariposa counties. Southern California would begin with Madera County in the Central Valley and then wind its way along the existing state’s eastern and southern spine, comprising 12 counties and ultimately curving up the Pacific coast to grab San Diego and Orange counties.

Well why don't you ask the LA Times about Germany since the linked article is dated June 12th?

I have a metric three tons of family in what would become "Southern California", and they support this bigly.

If I'd been drawing the lines, I'd have just moved the "California" border farther north to include the Bay area and give them a few more electoral votes for that area.

Congress would have to approve it. Highly unlikely; but who knows.

Me too. It would probably more accurately represent the state.

Split it up,

Northern third along with Oregon and Washington go to Canada.

West Coast and Hawaii go to the Japanese.

Southern Cali of course goes to Mexico.

The US can keep South Lake Tahoe and give it to Nevada. We also can keep Catalina Island as testament to the Beach Boys. The Dodgers ho back to Brooklyn and the Giants supplant the Mets in Queens. That would be appropriate. The Mets move to Vegas.

Is this a good thing? I only see this as a way for them to get 6 Democrat Senators to Washington instead of the current 2. For Presidential elections, I see each of these three new states going Democrat just like Chicago makes the rest of red Illinois go: Sacramento/San Fran will make NoCa go blue, LA will make Ca go blue, and San Diego will make SoCa go blue.

So they're gaining 4 default Democrat Senators and the 55 electoral votes will still go Democrat, too.

Why do we want this?

Would Republicans have any shot at Northern CA in a presidential election? That might be worth ceding more Senators.
