Racist Interstates?

The Grio - Buttigieg says racism built into US infrastructure
quote:
However, when it comes to the historic nature of the Black unemployment rate, Walsh acknowledges racism has played a part in the unemployment numbers that have historically been twice that of white America. Walsh says there needs to be “real intention about the investments that are made there, and job training, workforce development, creating opportunities and pathways into the middle class for Black and brown people.”
As Secretary Buttigieg notes, “this wasn’t just an act of neglect,” adding that it was a “conscious choice.”

“There is racism physically built into some of our highways, and that’s why the jobs plan has specifically committed to reconnect some of the communities that were divided by these dollars,” he says.
A bipartisan meeting is slated in the Oval Office next week with congressional leaders on President Biden’s infrastructure plan. The meeting comes amid rising concerns about how to pay for the multi-trillion dollar plan. Republicans and some Democrats concerns about 15 years of corporate tax hikes that are targeted at paying for the plan. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia is opposed to the idea.
Secretary Buttigieg says President Biden is asking for a 28% corporate tax hike compared to 35% that was set in place before the Trump administration and Republicans passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017.

It's well past time to paint lane dividers/markers black so we can end white paint supremacy.

The racism propaganda of modern day is probably one of the most successful political strategies of all time. I wonder how long it can last?
On another note, WTF qualfied a dipshit mayor to be transportation secretary?

I think there is a fair critique regarding what could be reasonably done about it at this point, but there are entire libraries of literature on this subject. In New Orleans, when the interstate was built back in the 50s, it quite famously mowed right through Claiborne Ave in Treme. That used to be a boulevard as grand as St. Charles Avenue. That kind of thing happened pretty much everywhere.

Nah the road under the tires are dark as it should be for us to remember the privilege we enjoy. The white lines care there to show rules and direction hence the power we have with our privileges

I didn't realize we built I-95 using slave labor.

Kramer is way ahead of you. But he's a (n-word) guy.

But, that just makes sense from several viewpoints/angles.
If something like an homeless camp is established in area (think the Mexico City slums with tin and plywood makeshift "neighborhoods") then routing construction of interstates through those areas literally forces the slum dwellers out who otherwise refuse to leave.
Something like the route of I-49 through Shreveport that is yet to be constructed. The area is a blight. The residents of the area refuse to relocate to allow for rejuvenation. Plan the interstate through there. Imminent Domain them and buyout with free relocation their butts. Then send in the bulldozers. Sure, it's a poor black inhabited area but it is not racism that put those residents there. They located themselves there. Out of all the land in N. America they chose that piece of ground of their own freewill.

While true, the Ninth Ward and Dryades Street didn't get mowed by the interstate and fared just as badly. Which indicates that it was the overall decline of the city, not the overpass, that was the culprit.

The question is did the government in the 1950s use race a factor in it's choices about which neighborhoods to protect or not in the building of the interstate system. There's tons of concurrent literature about New Orleans and other cities that says yes. You're arguing that the government was correct to destroy those particular neighborhood. And, well that's a separate argument isn't it?

This is true. Iirc, wasn’t it proposed to go along the riverfront and was shot down. In short, Treme was plan B (again...IIRC).
That kind of thing happened pretty much everywhere.
It happened, but not everywhere and not all of the time. Peter boy is pushing a narrative that is questionable in many instances. If you disagree, then explain the abortion that is the 90 degree turn coming off of the Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge.

Trees are racist.
Highways are racist.
Single family homes are racist.
Nuclear (white) families are racist.
Math is racist.
Science is racist.
Clean water is racist.
Does the media wait for when some Biden appointee declares clean air to be racist to start calling out all the chicken littles?

It was built as a way to flow traffic , not a barrier since no blockage was created . And as far as the area it was increasing becoming black but was not a historic black area
