Race for Louisiana's Speaker of the House

This seems entirely reasonable: AG Landry and Sen Kennedy encourage House GOP to elect an R as Speaker
Hope the House conservatives do the right thing and rally around whoever will appoint legit conservatives to chairmanships and likewise stack important committees with conservatives. Sounds like Sherman Mack, a lower profile member from near Hammond, has the inside track right now from the more pro-business, conservative members of the House.
With both chambers of the legislature leaning more conservative (at least on paper) than ever before it seems fair to return the favors offered in the Senate by D's and severe RINOs over the past four years of JBE reign.

Yeah, I think Mack and Schexnayder are the leaders, but by no means is this a done deal yet.
I think the GOP gets it, but we will see.

They never do get it. The governor will dangle some really beautiful carrot in front of a midline RINO, they'll take the bait and the black caucus, and the story will be over.

Absolutely could see it.
But who though? I am really trying to root out the JBE moderate. It's not Sherman or Clay. Not Lance. Barry Ivey is in his own world. Not Garafalo.
I just don't see who the JBE guy might be. Any ideas?

Paula Davis? High profile after last session. Gets along with everybody. Pragmatic. Republican. Connected lobbyist husband.

I could see Davis being JBEs dark horse for sure. She did the gov a lot of favors by authoring a huge sales tax increase.
Mack seems to have the most legit conservative support. Schexnayder seems like a good dude but sounds like he has a lot of less conservative supporters surrounding him--that should be concerning for most of the state.
JBE barely won re-election and it was based on three parishes over-performing. There's no reason for conservative legislators from parishes not named Orleans to buckle.

Agreed on Davis. She's pretty on the eyes but I don't trust her enough with a job like Speaker. It's too big of a risk after the damage that JBE has done the last four years.
Now is the time for the conservative statehouse to make clear that JBE is a lame duck and will not have the success he did in his first four years.

That and Rispone running the worst campaign he possibly could run.
Rispone made the mistake of insulting New Orleans and Baton Rouge and let democrats go completely ape shite there.
He wants to compare himself to Trump so much that he forgot that not even Trump was stupid enough to insult specific locations and the voters in it.
If Rispone had managed to get Edwards down to 65-72% in Orleans parish, decent chance he would be Governor-Elect tonight.

Isn't Sherman Mack a trial lawyer?

I see Davis as acceptable to JBE and everyone could be OK with her, but she isn't running.
She might be Ways and Means chair though.

That went out the door when JBE won re-election. No matter who’s the speaker.

Mack is for tort reform. It is the only simple big issue that communicates concern for the middle class that has a chance of passing.

“And yet he comes off in that video as a grasping, money-grubbing shyster.” This billboard trial lawyer isn’t changing his stripes.

.....I don't really care. But I was wondering. Does the Speaker of the House still hand out kickback checks, from the gambling casinos, on the floor of the legislature?
Just curious.

You really should care. The Speaker appoints Committee Chairs, and if those folks are even reasonably adept, they can completely control what reaches the Floor.

Hahaha. Fortunately those days are over. But for those who care about state issues the Speaker's race is heating right back up. It'll be interesting to see what happens next week.
I care very much about destroying Clemson on Monday. Conservatives across the state should also care about how this Speaker's race shakes out.

Sherman is basically a dime store Gordon McKernan.
I had thought he was term limited and was going to run for district attorney for 21st JDC. Maybe he is after this term and will run for DA after.

Only Nixon could go to China.
Only a trial lawyer can pass tort reform. The big secret is there won’t be any car wreck cases in 10 years.
