No one had to teach me anything. I was living in it.
Schools were segregated till the late 60s.
In the 50s I observed the following:
a. Blacks were not allowed to swim in the Rec Dept. pool.
b. Blacks watched movies up in the balcony section.
c. Doctors had white and black waiting rooms on either side of the nurses station.
In the 60s schools were still segregated.
I have no idea what voting laws were in place because I was too young to vote.
On the good side:
Every weekend the 'colored' section of the local newspaper had lots of wedding photos. I don't recall the last time I saw a wedding pic of blacks getting married in the local paper. Probably about 6 months ago.
Drug usage and crime were very rare. Black unemployment was also much lower than it is today.

It was taught in my schools. My folks talked about it too.

My parents made us watch Roots the mini-series. We discussed the injustice of seperate but equal. ). Anyway, I was in high school when black people were finally allowed into restaurants, didn't have to sit in the balcony in the movie theater and the schools were actually desegregated.

Was taught nothing about it. Learned about the civil war and slavery but that was it.

What? No. I want to know what people were taught. I was taught none of it. I mean, I probably learned about a poll tax in 1905 or something. But I can honestly say not a single adult in my life ever mentioned anything to me about dirty pool like this at that late of a date.

My father was a doctor that had one waiting room or all of his patients regardless of color. The worst word you could utter was the N word as he would beat the absolute shite out of you. I did so twice before I was ten.

I know for a fact that in the schools I went to - both public and private - it was not taught in any detail...and when it was taught, it was taught as if it were long dead and gone.

No. My opinion is that we have such generational ignorance on a topic we should all be much better educated about, it generates an even worse dynamic between the races.

They learned that in the 1960's, the state of Louisiana was still systematically trying to keep blacks off the voter rolls by using brain teasers disguised as "literacy tests"? You are honestly telling me a student in 1970 was being taught that?
