there is a difference between Eastern Orthodox Christians and Byzantine Catholics. Basically one recognizes the authority of the Pope the other doesn't. Orthodox don't recognize the authority of the Pope, Byzantine Catholics do.
In the Catholic Church, there are six rites and 23 churches in those six rites. Basically different churches in the Catholic Church follow different liturgical rites.
As far as I understand it, Putin is not Catholic but Orthodox and his Church isn't in union with the Pope.

Yes it is catholic, what it’s not is Roman Catholic.
Every Orthodox Church (Russian, Greek, etc.) are catholic - small “c”. They all have a “valid” Mass and if a Roman Catholic is unable to attend a Roman Catholic Mass their Sunday obligation is covered by attending the Mass of an Orthodox Church.
