PSA’s washing the impact of data centers?

This is a weird place to be. There are a lot of factors at play, but the average American deserves the truth about these things good or bad. It’s too new for the general public to know the real long-term implications, but this needs to be a matter of the people to decide with full info at-hand.

It’s industry. Accept it or try to shutter it.. rural areas are in need of jobs and sometimes there’s tradeoffs… the only complaint should be regarding potential power issues and costs…

You guys are so caught up in the environmental impact of data centers that you ignore the real problem. These are massive computers that are being installed.
Their public presenting reason is to support learning language models (LLM) computing. People conflate LLM with artificial intelligence (AI) because when you interact with them they seem to be the same
Chat GPT was released to the public a couple years back and now we have a host of other LLM helping us do everything from emails, recipes and advanced discussion on the topics that interest us.
This was to get us to support the data centers because the general public needs more LLM power.
The reality is that these data centers represent raw processing power . They don't necessarily need to support LLM. Instead they are the infrastructure for true artificial intelligence (AI).
Once the infrastructure is in place, your access to free LLM will be revoked and they can do what they want with it, including developing true AI that only they will be the benefactors

It's the new nuclear power. If the enviro-wackos hadn't of gotten their way, we'd all be so much better off. Including the environment, ironically.

You realize these are being built mostly by public companies who are spending trillions, right? They have to get a ROI or it's going to tank our economy and send us into the actual recession we've been avoiding since 2009.
How does your conspiracy theory work with this necessary revenue structure? The US government alone can't even provide the necessary revenue to keep this all afloat.

It's not shocking given how easily foreign actors use the internet to swing the mob mentality in the US. Russia and China have been doing it highly effectively for over a decade now. It's really ramped up post-Q, when a sizeable portion of the country showed just how retarded they can be.

Axios pumping up China interfering in the U.S. on this issue (perhaps on behalf of big tech) is the psy-op IMO. I think the opposition has been pretty organic. I'm personally not that invested in it, though.

It’s buildings with computers in them. Holy hell, I’ve never seen such commotion about nothing. Sure I would not want one next door, but that is true of EVERYTHING other than a house.
You will never find industry more innocuous than data centers. To be opposed to data centers, for reasons of pollution, noise, etc, is to be opposed to all industry and to modernity.

Personal anecdote. A good friend was laid off recently. Nearing retirement, he's pissed at the company (which closed a facility). So he decided he's going to retire anyway because he invested well.
Then, last week he received an offer: almost unlimited work: $6k/ wk.
It is a boom for the trades.

Prior to this AI spending boom, the world spent 42 trillion the last decade on computing and devices........that ROI turned out pretty well.
When we went from hunters and gatherers to agricultural societies it freed up time to do wonderous things.
Same with the renaissance.
The industrial revolution.
The computer evolution.
The internet.
Any tool can be used for good or evil, but you better have it in your quiver, lest you be at the mercy of rogue nations who do.
How many people scream about their right to own a gun......and complain about data centers. Might as well sell that gun and buy Mandarin for dummies, ya gonna need it.

They have been around for decades, yet they change the name to AI data centers and its evil. We all use them everyday and have been for years.
Its akin to the sun rising being called CLIMATE CHANGE and the world goes bonkers.
