The greatest sin,
Denying Jesus as your Lord and Savior is what will send you to hell. If you truly believe and seek His will in your life you cannot live your life in sin. I did not say you will not sin but that you cannot live an active life of sin.
quote:
ignoring those in need around you
So, you are saying that because some ignore those in need around that the moral basis of God's Law has been forever corrupted by man?

me deeply skeptical about those who declare an absolute understanding of scripture
We can agree here the same as we can agree about those that preach certain "gospels" with the donation hotline and website...

The deeper love of God engages the mind and struggles mightily with the Word.
Sometimes it gets back to our unwillingness to just let go and realize that our mind cannot possibly wrap around everything God can do or has done. When I struggle it is either I have so much clutter going on in my life that it gets in the way of true study OR I try to overthink things. That's how I look at it.
quote:
God isn't afraid of my challenging assumptions
I would argue that God isn't afraid of anything and I also would not look toward the assumptions of men for enlightenment. I think in this world, "we" are always trying to explain things away that we do not "like" about following Jesus instead of seeing that those are the very things that are holding us back from having a ministry for God through the way we live our lives.
quote:
I also think faith involves taking the words of Christ very, very seriously. And I think most people ignore a lot of what He said.
I can agree with that as well.

Why are you trying to apply it to government?
Because you and I as citizens have influence on government.
Do you think Donald Trump loves his neighbor as himself?
If not, then is it a sin to vote for him?
Don't deflect with "Biden is just as bad." You don't have to vote for Biden to avoid voting for Trump.
So what say you?

I'm saying that nearly all of us, me included, ignore those in need around us. If we really took Jesus seriously, we would change that.

Perfectly? No. But that may reveal a flaw in your question. Did King Saul love his neighbor? King David? King Solomon?

It would appear that God’s standard for leadership may be different than yours.

No. But none of the Israelites were asked to vote for or against any of them. That begs the question.
You have a moral choice to make with your vote.

Baptized in a river. I can still make a joyful noise.

Ok, but why are we looking to government to take care of others when it is something that we should be doing as believers? Why should government get the glory, when it should be God getting the glory?
quote:
Do you think Donald Trump loves his neighbor as himself?
I think God has used less than stellar men throughout history in order to accomplish His will. I also believe that God placed Donald Trump where he is at this point in time.

If not, then is it a sin to vote for him?
How could you classify it as a sin to vote for him or anyone if you seek God's guidance before you vote? Do you think God will tell you to vote for the wrong person?

The greatest sin, according to Jesus, is ignoring those in need around you. That is, if I recall correctly, one of the very few things that would send you to hell, according to the Lord and Savior. You think we really emphasize that "sin" in our lives?
Interesting. What if I’m a practicing Buddhist or Muslim? Will I go to Heaven when I pass away?

It doesn’t beg the question. They were chosen by God to lead and yet they were really bad examples of morality at many points in their lives.
quote:
moral choice to make
Sure. That doesn’t boil down to simply their morals or their sins.

So you aren’t voting for Biden?

I really do not think believers get enough credit for what they do and try to do when it comes to those in need. I am old but I can remember when there was a family in need in the community, the local church always reached out and tried to meet that need.... Some churches still do that to some extent...
Now, do you think the world wants people reliant on the government or thankful for a church that ministers to them through the mercy of Jesus Christ?
The world would be a lot better place if more people turned to Jesus and tried to live their life according to His will.

The case for capital punishment is strongest when applied to child rapists.

You were chosen by God to live in a nation that allows you to vote. You can't duck that obligation.

I see. So sin matters everywhere else. But it is just one factor in your vote.
Sorry. I just can't see it that way.

Sin matters everywhere. I didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 in large part because of his personal morals. After the last four years, I will march my happy arse to the polls in a few weeks and fill in the bubble with pride.
