I don't think he's downplaying it. I agree the reaction online is depressing
OMG he's a racist nazi he's trivializing the holocaust!!! (Which I guess he is if you take him word for word but anyone with a brain understood what he was trying to say, it's just that it was profoundly stupid)

He meant nerve agents. The Nazis had Sarin but decided against using it. They used the blood agent hydrogen cyanide to kill in the extermination camps.

Part of me doesn't want him too because it emboldens the fake outrage crowd but at the same time, trump needs his own risk assessment. Is he worth it?

It was an ineloquent and hardly accurate analogy and an avoidable mistake.
That said, it is being treated with way too much gravitas by the MSM (I'm shocked, SHOCKED that the MSM are taking such drivel and overreacting!!!!!) and it is certainly not going to cause WWIII.
