The man was a tyrant. And he wasn’t an abolitionist by any stretch. Abolitionists of the era were not fond of Lincoln. He defended slave holders in courts. He said he would keep slavery if it meant the south not seceding. He wanted to send all slaves to Haiti. He suspended constitutional rights for all Americans, not just people living in the confederacy. He jailed reporters. He allowed Seward to completely disregard the constitution and act like a North Korean dictator. His emancipation proclamation didn’t free one slave and wasn’t applied to territory held by Union soldiers. The British papers mocked it because it was so clearly an attempt to start a slave revolt. The British mocked it and they were a nation that abolished slavery years before the U.S. He was Henry Clay’s puppet brainchild. Slavery was going to go away regardless of Lincoln. It was an unholy dying institution. He didn’t need to oversee a war where more than 600,000 people lost their lives. That percentage of the population would be roughly 6,000,0000 million dead today. He starved southern cities and the Union army raped and pillaged while burning cities to the ground and made no determination whether it was a military target or not.
