Porn stars vs. parenthood: Ron DeSantis plays the family card against Trump.

This piece is going to trigger cajunangelle's Casey Derangement Syndrome.

DeSantis is leaning into an image that projects wholesome family values to win over Iowa evangelicals who may be turned off by the drama around Trump.
quote:
It has become a bit. In these early days of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ bid for president, Casey DeSantis joins her husband onstage, and the stories start to roll.
There’s the one about bottled water from the Sea of Galilee, preciously savored for the children’s baptisms, that’s accidentally tossed out by a housekeeper at the governor's residence. Then there are Casey’s attestations of mom-hood, battling permanent marker scrawls on furniture and dragging by day’s end, when her husband comes home from work and she hands over the three children.
The couple fires off all the indicators of wholesome family values to a conservative evangelical-heavy GOP audience. And even without mentioning Donald Trump's name, they set up an inescapable antithesis to the former president, who faces charges related to a porn star payoff and was found liable for sexual abuse and who, when he landed in Iowa on Thursday, wasn’t accompanied by his wife.
The DeSantis team knows whom it’s playing to in Iowa and beyond. At a retreat for donors last week in Miami, campaign officials estimated that 65% of Iowa GOP caucusgoers are evangelical Christians. According to a person with knowledge of the DeSantis team’s early-state strategy, it's betting that that segment of the party is sick of the sexualized drama from a man also under investigation for classified documents seized from his sprawling Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.
But breaking off conservative evangelical support from Trump is no easy feat, given that he is credited with having appointed three Supreme Court justices who eventually joined a conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Nevertheless, the DeSantis team sees it as a necessary path to winning early states.

Karl Rove late ‘90s, early 2000s game plan. Go hard in the paint on social issues and stay away from hard issues like trade and foreign policy.

So they are re-creating a 'Leave it to Beaver' episode vs. grab the beaver.
Got it.
Got it.

Uh..hasn't Trump very recently touted his role in overturning RvW?

Have they not realized that with his base bringing up his personal shortcomings in this area does not dissuade them in the slightest? It matters because DeSantis has to pull people from Trump’s base to win obviously

You’re like a sock puppet at this point.

Yes. Why are you confused?

I’ll admit. I wrote Trump off in 2016. I assumed he never had a chance with the all-important evangelical right wing. Porn stars, casinos, highly visible life of debauchery, overall sinful lifestyle. Shows what I know

Desantis doesn’t have to pull them if Trump pushes them away.

Your association of the "Karl Rove game plan" with only one of the candidates.
Seems that's in the playbook for both of them

Government spending is the biggest issue. Next year we will spend almost as much to service the 32 trillion in debt as we do on the military.
Trump is DOA on this issue. We just get crickets from him.
Trade? The culture war is more important.

This is GWB campaign redux. I’ve seen this movie before.

“The United States has been increasingly captive to an arrogant, stale, and failed ruling class,” DeSantis wrote in his book, “The Courage to be Free.” The elites, he continued, helped China rise by giving the country “most favored nation” trade status; “supported military adventurism around the world without clear objectives or prospect for victory” and “weaponized the national security apparatus by manufacturing the Russian collusion conspiracy theory.”

Because Christians believe that God may not use the most perfect Godly vessel to get them thru the hardest times.
We don't need "clean-cut nice" right now. We need need someone willing and able to get down and dirty to clean shite up, and hand it off to "clean-cut nice" to maintain it for the long run.

I don't get it.
No one, and I mean NO one expects Trump to be a pious family man, and they didn't care last time.

Has nothing to do with what I said.
Gumbo is trying to attach [insert derogative x-ist label] to RDS for using the same strategy Trump is using.
If it's such a concern that RDS is using it, where are his criticisms of Trump for using it?

He’s going where the votes are. Trump has left him an opening there, and he’s going to take it.
