Pope Francis has extended the powers of Catholic priests to forgive abortions, making the announcement in an apostolic letter released Monday.
It continues a special dispensation granted last year for the duration of the Year of Mercy, which finished Sunday.
"I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father," the letter states.
"May every priest, therefore, be a guide, support and comfort to penitents on this journey of special reconciliation," the letter continues.
"I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion."

Glad to see the Catholic Church has progressed to white washing murder.
FWIW as a Protestant I believe all sins are forgivable by God. I still can't figure out what right a priest has to do it.

This is NOTHING NEW.
Just saying.
God's mercy has always been infinite for the contrite.

Can't catholic priests already forgive murder? Seems redundant.

Already forgivable.

What a silly religion (in the true pejorative sense of the term) Roman Catholicism has become. Well I guess it has a history of being silly and dangerous.

This is nothing new. All sins can be forgiven, but only if the sinner is truly repentant.
Once again, partisans are going to get all hot and bothered over the Pope restating long-established church doctrine.

Sadly, a large chunk of them aren't.

I think it's an emotional thing. It is far easier for one to be sorry about something and never tell anyone. It takes a different level of contrition to be able to freely confess one's sins to someone else. I'm not saying the Protestant method is baseless, I'm just arguing that there may be a valid cause for the Catholic method.

Media is determined to get this wrong.
They will get this wrong by making this seem like a this is a new Church position (it's not).
The media will also ignore the fact that abortion is still a mortal sin.

When it comes to forgiveness, the only affirmation should be from the Lord

This seems pretty consistent with Catholic dogma. As a lifelong Catholic, reconciliation is a sacrament that one seek redemption for all sins. Normally those most grave sins are the ones confessed.

I didn't vote for him and I don't know anyone who did. They should change the whole system. It's a travesty, and I'm scared. THERE IS NO SAFE SPACE!

The affirmation IS from the Lord. The priest just hears the confession. You're not really repentant if you can't bring yourself to tell someone your sins in person.

Atheist.
It's not a hard concept, the Sacraments are specific acts performed by Christ as part of his original ministry, charged Peter with carrying it on.
Through Peter and the rest of the Bishops that followed you have an often poor attempt to emulate Christ. One of those is a truly contrite heart putting himself to God's mercy through Jesus. That's all Reconciliation is, putting yourself persinally into Jesus' field of view of your own volition and asking for mercy.
Now the argument can be it's not anymore personal than directly doing it yourself. But it can also be argued that part of being really contrite is admitting "publicly" your sin.
