This is true. This is the Act of Contrition I always pray during Confession (notice that it only mentions Christ and God):

This article and the translation is slightly misleading. Catholic priests have always had the ability to forgive the sin of abortion. However, one who goes through the abortion - according to Canon Law - is automatically ex-communicated from the Church. Only a bishop can rescind an ex-communication.

What Pope Francis is doing here is allowing his priests to also rescind ex-communications for those who have gotten abortions.

And yes I am born and raised Catholic. I've said it before, here on this site, that I do not agree with everything this Pope says or does. That's MY opinion.

They will complain about seeing more overweight women beating their kids around at Walmart and McDonald's.

FWIW as a Protestant I believe all sins are forgivable by God. I still can't figure out what right a priest has to do it.

Read John 20:23. That is where the Catholic Church claims that Christ gave men the authority to forgive sins in His name.

I've posted that verse. Most have ignored it and one did some serious mental gymnastics to show that Jesus didn't really say what He said.

Can't catholic priests already forgive murder? Seems redundant.

Murder carries a latae sentitae (automatic) excommunication. An individual excommunicates themselves by committing the act. This is in contrast to latae ferendae excommunication which is issued by a tribunal.

Excommunication can typically be lifted only by a bishop. It's already common practice in the West for bishops to delegate the authority to priests to lift a latae sentitae excommunication. This is more practical since the penitent doesn't have to seek out the bishop, or have the priest go to the bishop, repeat what he heard in confession, and go back to the penitent.

The priest hearing confession is in persona Christi, acting on behalf of Jesus, not simply a priest.

It sounds like you don't understand the sacrament of reconciliation.

Correct.

In this context, think of it like power of attorney.

Since when does the Pope decide he can and can't be forgiven? What happened to God?

He must have seen the election results and realize he needs to appease his money base for the church.

I don't think the Pope as ever said somebody can't ever be forgiven, he's just apparently broadening the priest's application of reconciliation to abortion (like other "sins").

I get the criticism of this sacrament, but it's like some of you have never heard of it before.

That's been asked and answered numerous times in this thread. In short, the Pope didn't decide. Jesus did.

The fact that choose to disregard 1,500 years of consistent Christian tradition is really arrogant.

Please tell us in your expert opinion what Jesus was referring to? Ok, now realize that some really smart theologians disagree with you.

I think if I have to side with someone, I think I will go with Thomas Aquinas over DupontsCircle.
