Politico is not saying no money from NGO which get the money from USAID. Politico is saying the money they got was from a service they provide (fee) not free tax payer dollars to write certain types of articles.

What it boils down to is do you believe this was some hunter biden paintings type of crap or was it legit business.

It's a huge conflict of interest, at minimum.

Of course they aren't going to say the "subscriptions" were bribery. Just like paying someone a speaking fee technically has a legit purpose and provides a service.

Mickey has to pump this discussion up. SlowFlowOweO could go 15 pages fighting about the definitions of "subsidy", "subscription", "tax money" and "payment".

POLITICO has never been a beneficiary of government programs or subsidies—

bullshite. They have been and it’s just been whitewashed through all the supposedly nonprofit NGO. It will be interesting to see if the Dems can still prop them up or if they will start laying people off.

EXCELLENT play on words. Except they got them from subscriptions from agencies themselves and from NGOs that got THEIR funds from the fedgov.

Sure sure and the corner bodega in Queens pays the guys in track suits for fire protection.

At the end of the day it’s an obvious conflict of interest which I’d imagine was never disclosed to their readers.

Also, isn’t it odd that during a time when traditional media resources are losing esteem and influence around the globe at alarming rates, the expenditures for politico and others went up exponentially.

Some publications, such as Politico Pro, Punchbowl and other niche publications offer pricier subscriptions that cater to certain coverage areas, and provide detailed reporting of policy matters in Washington, D.C., that are meant for a more specialized audience of lobbyists and lawyers and others in the federal government.

Why would subscription be paid through USAID? Wouldn't subscription be paid through the agency and departments that have the subscriptions?

Also, the government is the source of the news so I would think they have all the information that politico has and a lot more at their fingertips. So why would they need a subscription to read about what the government or government insiders are doing? If Biden Admin was relying on Politico for their intelligence, then doesn't that tell us even more about how bad our govt has been that they were operating in an echo chamber of their own news??

https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/05/media/politico-usaid-subscription-government/index.html

quote:

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, responding Wednesday to a question about a right-wing conspiracy theory, announced that the federal government would cancel $8 million worth of Politico subscriptions.

Leavitt elevated a bogus claim spreading on social media that Politico and the Associated Press for years received millions of dollars from the US Agency for International Development, which President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have targeted by placing staff on leave. In reality, the payments represented the whole of the federal government’s subscriptions to the news outlets’ services. All federal agencies combined spent $8.2 million last year on Politico Pro, according to USASpending.gov.

At a White House press briefing, Leavitt told reporters that she had been made aware of USAID funding to media outlets, including Politico, and noted that taxpayer dollars that have been allocated toward “essentially subsidizing subscriptions to Politico on the American taxpayers’ dime will no longer be happening.”

“The DOGE team is working on canceling those payments now,” Leavitt said.

But as reporters quickly pointed out in response to false statements on social media, the payments are not exclusively USAID funds.

“I looked at these contracts and I have my own fun fact,” Byron Tau, an investigative reporter at the Associated Press, said via X. “This is occurring because agencies (not just USAID) are buying subscriptions to Politico’s Pro editorial product, not because Politico is getting grants or other federal funding.”

https://thedispatch.com/article/fact-check-politico-usaid-funding/

quote:

The only payments received by Politico LLC from USAID were for two subscriptions to E&E—an energy and environment publication it produces—totaling $44,000 over two years.

According to USAspending.gov, an official source for U.S. government expenditure data—and the resource used by Becker in his post—Politico received $8.2 million in total payments from government departments and agencies between fiscal year 2016 and fiscal year 2025. However, only $44,000 of this total came from USAID.

In September 2023, a staff assistant for the Center for Environment, Energy, and Infrastructure—part of USAID’s Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation—purchased a subscription to E&E for $20,000. According to E&E, prices for its professional subscription packages typically start in the upper four-figure range and vary based on how many users have access to a subscription. Another subscription to E&E was purchased in September 2024 for $24,000 by the Center for Climate Positive Development—an office within USAID’s Bureau for Resilience and Food Security.
