I run a program that helps felons on probation/parole get their GEDs. Today I found out one of my most consistent and promising students was arrested over the weekend. It’s just devastating.
Imagine devoting personal time, effort, emotional connections to help others..only to have it disappear in an instant. Props for trying, but most of us with common sense see it as a futile effort.
Maybe you should have sexed him up?

Two simple questions:
1) Before his recent arrest, what were all of his felony convictions?
2) What did he get arrested for?

No. Did C. Thompkins write it? There’s a chapter in the book I’m reading on it but I suspect the same author wrote the paper you found. The book is A Burdensome Experiment. There’s a free pdf of it online.
I was kidding about the thread. I think I’m close to exceeding my capacity for online hostility from unhinged strangers for the week after this thread but I do have some questions and thoughts about the concept of racial arbitrage in the context of the post Katrina landscape of disaster capitalism in New Orleans. I’m just going to email the author rather than take my chances here.
My dissertation committee chair is an anthropologist who I think also wrote a book on disaster capitalism in post K New Orleans. I’m meeting with him this afternoon so I’ll probably talk to him about it, too. The guy who wrote A Burdensome Experiment is also an anthropologist.

It's a long, long thread... but she said ALL of charges/convictions were driving related. He has no license, but she hasn't disclosed what other violations he was popped with. Others have speculated based on knowledge of how you catch a felony on a driving charge.
His last arrest was driving related, w/o license and at least two if not more other related charges.

I believe this is what the paper is about. The paper is accessible by contacting the author like you said, I posted a link to it last night, somewhere in here.

I don't blame you!
Have a lovely Friday and First Day of Spring!

Batting my eyelashes used to be a fun tactic to use sometimes... at 43 it doesn’t work as well except with my husband.

Cubbies, you’ve become a Board lightning rod, but even so, your ministry to that “certain demographic “ should come with measured expectations of success. Jesus acknowledged that “many are called but few are chosen “. The vast majority will not attain ‘heaven’ in this life. But hopefully will gain experience and knowledge for our relative rewards into the next. If there is no ‘next’, we ALL end up in the same grave of non existence.
The battle that you and your wards fight is spiritual, against spiritual “powers and principalities “; and therein you must fight in that manner. The enemy is our self. An example would be Alcoholics Anonymous and their protocol for people with very powerful and innate character flaws/psychoses to accept the truth that it is beyond their own ability to overcome these powers minus help from “Above “. Jesus as it were. I found this out in my own battle, way back. Intelligence and willpower alone won’t cut it. Only Grace by Faith.
IMO, no matter your best efforts, the outcome for both you and your “weaker brethren “ will depend on your Faith and the measure of Grace (“Grace is measured “). Jesus knows the heart of all who battle, and measures accordingly. He will not usurp our own will and our ultimate victory in choosing and willfully creating our character. Such that WE have a true gift of ‘worship’ to offer our Loving God. Our journey is eternal and we won’t be sitting around and smelling the roses in our adjudged, next life Heaven. We’ll be doing serious work towards advancing Truth and Love. Ruling/working with the Good Lord.
Good luck and God speed in your labor.

Are you embarrassed to admit why this young student was on parole?
Posted on 3/20/26 at 8:33 am to NIH
He's not on parole. Why would I be embarrassed about someone else's conviction? It has nothing to do with me.

For better or worse, very true.
As always, thanks for your thoughtful response.

... thats religious mumbo jumbo, and unbiblical

Pseudo Christians do not fight against powers and principalities, they fight for them.
quote:
Jesus as it were. I found this out in my own battle, way back. Intelligence and willpower alone won’t cut it. Only Grace by Faith.
I promise you there is no salvation is pseudo Christianity, there is only an active choice to go to hell.
I tell you this out of concern, she is very deep in heresy and misleading others.
Pseudo Christianity and good works leads only to hell.
Matthew 7:21-23
quote:
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
I have no idea what you beleive, but not once in this thread was there a concern for his soul.
In fact it was obvious that this was a very empty concern about his actions.
She knew he was driving without a license, she will not bail him out of jail.
With the misdirection she has applied here it seems like it's her employment to administrate the people in this program.
If you are a pseudo Christian like her who uses the gospels as a warm fuzzy and rejects everything else unless they want to pick a verse for politics, then please keep patting each other's back.
If you consider yourself a Christian, you praising her is going to encourage her down the road to hell.
She calls herself Catholic and supposedly teaches catechism, but rejects the old testament and any part of the New that disagrees with her politics.
She has admitted that for years she called herself pro life to mislead people when her views are far from it, she legally is pro choice and will vote and fight for that.
She is extremely pro lesbian, often praising that state of sin and defending continually leaving her daughter at the home of two lesbian women.
She does not honor her husband, she often derides him to praise herself.
She rejects all biblical confirmation of civil authority and wishes to bring society to a lawlessness state.
Her words are twisted, and no where here is she concerned for his soul or indeed willing to do more than the job she is paid for.

It’s very easy and comfortable for people who aren’t around “a certain demographic” to cast judgment from places of privilege but y’all just don’t know what some people are up against.
With all due respect, none of us knows what the other posters have or have not experienced.

This is why as a "hard" field scientist you Anthropologist folks lose me.
Yall talk like you sniff your own farts and your statistics suck and are manipulative because most of them dont know how to operate SPSS properly
Not as a slight against you, but the PhD program you are pursuing

I'm not pursuing a degree in anthropology, but it another interdisciplinary field at which I'm sure you would also scoff.
I took some required classes that this guy taught. We argued frequently and then he offered to mentor me.
Academics are bizarre. I will not be pursuing a career in academia.
I'm not sure I understand what is meant by "racial arbitrage." The examples the author provides in the book I'm reading look like something much different to me. But I guess academics all try to make names for themselves by intellectualizing common human behavior.
