Recess is a drop in the bucket, activity-wise. It’s because modern electronics keeps us indoors all the time. When I was a kid, no one had computers at home and we spent all the time we could outside. In the summers, our moms would say “Get out, and I don’t want to see you until dusk”. We’d come in for lunch and drink/pee breaks, and the rest of the time we were on our bikes or something else.
Now virtually EVERYTHING kids do is on a touch screen, keyboard, or joystick. All inside, with microwave tendies and deep dish pizzas at the ready.

This is timely. Just last night was reading a book discussing Great Britain's preparedness for war around 1904. A commission that was created, determined that 60% wouldn't pass the physical standards of the Army. There was also a lot of handwringing about the male population becoming more effeminate at the time.
