It's hard to tell but I think DePape opens the door with his left hand.
Set the video to the slowest playback speed and start at 37 seconds when the door starts to open. Pelosi has a drink in his left hand and his right hand appears to be holding the hammer. DePape's right hand is on the hammer and it looks like he reaches across with his left hand to open the door. Then DePape puts his left hand on his hip. Pelosi continues to stand there with a drink in his left hand and his right hand gripping the hammer.
DEPAPE IS NOT HOLDING PELOSI AT ALL FOR A FEW SECONDS. Pelosi just stands there looking at the cops. Never drops his drink. In fact, he doesn't drop the drink until he's clocked in the head.

This seems like a legitimate question. I watched it back several times and to me it is impossible to determine how the door opened. DePape's right hand is holding the hammer and his left is on his hip and nowhere near the door. Pelosi's right is holding the hammer and his left is holding his drink and also nowhere near the door.
This thing just gets weirder and weirder.

Clearly Pelosi was drunk. He probably grabbed the hammer and then tried to deescalate while waiting for police to arrive.
meanwhile invader was waiting for Nancy to arrive. when the cops showed up he knew he wasn't getting nancy so settled for paul knowing the gig was up

Notice the blue painting tape around the windows at the front door? Makes me wonder if Paul hired (so they both already knew each other) him to do some maintenance such as painting around the house and they got in a argument about something. Hence, they both looked calm when opening the door.

The idea that he was suddenly awaken in the night by a home invader seems pretty weak considering he answered the door in a collared dress shirt holding a cocktail.
