Patagonia has always been a very political company. Not sure why anyone is surprised or annoyed by this. If you are familiar at all with them, this is standard.

Why are they melting if this won’t affect public use of the land?
I don’t know the specifics here, but in general, opposition to public ownership of wilderness lands seems like capitalism gone wild to me.
