Panera: A Lesson in the Failure of Socialism

From Eater.com:

There's no such thing as a free lunch anymore at Panera.
The sandwich chain will close its last pay-what-you-can location next week after determining the model wasn't sustainable. It's already shut the other free-meals cafes around the country, including locations in Chicago; Clayton, Mo.; Portland, Ore.; and Dearborn, Mich., and its Boston concept will close its doors Feb. 15 after a six-year run.
The original idea was to allow customers to give a suggested donation for their food in a bid to raise awareness about hunger across the U.S. The funds collected were supposed to cover the store's operating costs while also paying for those who couldn't afford their food.
"Despite our commitment to this mission, it's become clear that continued operation of the Boston Panera Cares is no longer viable," Panera Bread said in an emailed statement.
From Eater.com:
quote:
At its peak, Panera Cares operated five locations, including ones in Dearborn, Michigan; Portland, Oregon; Boston, and Chicago. Each restaurant was designed to sustain itself, but the restaurants weren’t financially viable. The Portland-based Panera Cares was reportedly only recouping between 60 and 70 percent of its total costs. The losses were attributed students who “mobbed” the restaurant and ate without paying, as well as homeless patrons who visited the restaurant for every meal of the week. The location eventually limited the homeless to “a few meals a week.”

I don't know if you can get much more lib-saturated than these locations and it underscores that libs don't give two shits about their fellow man.

Are there really supposedly educated people who are not capable of predicting the inevitability of this?
I'm sorry. You lose the right to call yourself "educated" if you didn't know this would happen. KNOW it would fricking happen. Not be pretty sure it would. Not think it could.
KNOW IF frickING WOULD ABSOLUTELY HAPPEN!

It was one of the company's three founders.
It's amazing to me how people can continue these altruistic yet half-assed ideas could ever work. It's like they've never met or even heard of other people before.

I wish we had one of those here. I've got a bunch of pennies I need to get rid of.

What's crazy is if you opened a gift wrapping place in a mall kiosk and worked for donations only, you would make MORE than charged labor values...double in my organization's case.
I did it for three years.
Eta: it's at Xmas time, and the organization is veteran based
From black Friday to Dec 23

This is the end-result of socialism, at any level. Why on Earth can they, the Democrat Socialists, not understand this?

The CEO and marketing team should all be canned for such a stupid decision.
You think the shareholders are cool with sagging revenues due to you giving away free food? lulz

And, something that ANYONE who claims to know business simply MUST know is the following truism.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep up with the demand for "free" shite.
I'm convinced you could sit in the mall offering free piles of shite and, you'd run out.

That's like waiters making $2.13/hr. If restaurants had to pay them a real wage and they couldn't get tips most of them would make much less. I worked in a restaurant where the waitresses could easily make $300 for 4-5 hours of work. It would be well under $100 relying only on a real wage and no tips.
