I want my driverless boat....and my driverless truck to launch it. I want to be three sheets to the wind from dawn until dusk. I have needs. They must be met.

The tweet didn’t say he was against technology. If that’s what you got from that then you lack reading comprehension and the ability to put things in context.
Then maybe he shouldn't have said airplanes are becoming "too complex" and "complexity creates danger".

The problem isn't that you need Albert Einstein to fly a plane, the problem is that your standard barrista can and in many cases they are.

Better pilots are absolutely necessary, but cutting back on technology as a general rule isn't.

I don't know what the exact problem is with this plane, but Trump chiming in will just create more panic and more pressure on Boeing and airlines.

Well Boeing needs a little pressure. Two of their brand new planes have nosedived into the ground on their own in the past few months. That’s a problem.

There's a reason our nuclear command and control systems still use 1970's computer technology. It's reliable, simple, and there's not 10 million lines of buggy code. I wouldn't want a modern computer controlling nukes, would you? I want a very simple system where humans make all the important decisions.

Likewise for the power grid. The SCADA systems are being controlled online now and that's a fricking terrible idea. They are doing it to save money, but it's terrible for security.

The same can be said for airplane flight. Some pilots have complained that Boeing is doing a poor job training them on all the software updates in this newer line of planes. This is the suspected cause of both of the recent 737 crashes.

Trump has a point here. There's just some things in life that I trust being in the hands of a seasoned human more than I do a computer. Airplane flight (at least commercial flight) is one of them.

I have all the airplane crash investigations in those two series on TV...

Half of the crashes is because the pilots don't understand the fricking plane.

And like Hal in 2001 a Space Odyssey, sometimes the plane just has a mind of its own.

By trying to create planes that TAKE OUT the human element in flying (thinking that is the sole cause of crashes) they've created planes that conflict with humans and our understanding of flying.

Is this... Is this a real post. Hahahaha. Dude, Trump is wrong here. It's okay. The sun will still come up in the morning. You don't have to stick up for everything he says.

HAL, holy shite hahaha.

No he doesn't. The best chess player in the world is a computer. The same amount of care can be programmed into a robot pilot. I will say that it would be nice to have one human in the cockpit in case something goes wrong with the programming though. Only until they get the whole thing ironed out

I don’t believe Trump is breaking any news. Many of us old fricks have watched this march towards automation and it’s filled with uncertainty.

I worked in the avionics industry in the 90’s when wind shear radar and TCAS were becoming very sophisticated and reliable. I doubt there’s much difference when comparing the base avoidance technologies from the 90’s to the technology used by modern aircraft, except I believe now the avoidance systems pretty much run the show, feeding information to an automated cockpit. I know the pilots are capable of taking control of the aircraft but in the old days before cockpit automation the avoidance systems would inform the pilots of the danger and they would have to make adjustments for flight control manually. Is there any commercial pilots on the PT board that have firsthand knowledge?

Thats the primary reason airline pilots exist now. To be there when something goes wrong. Otherwise flying is very easy and almost anyone with average intelligence can do it. Pilots get paid to deal with emergencies. Some of the new technology inhibits the pilot from doing so, which was the point of Trump’s tweet.
