some of the commenters who claim that, yes, slavery was bad, but American slavery was the worst

They do nothing but prove their own ignorance. The Trans-Saharan Slave Trade went on for FAR longer, impacted FAR more people and the Arabians were at least as bad as Westerners.

One of the big differences between the two trades was that the Saharan trade focused more on females (females were captured/traded 3:1 over males). Their primary duties were sex/harems and household chores while the males were field and construction laborers (males were routinely, but not always, castrated). Children fathered by the owners of a slave woman were considered free, but the father had to claim paternity. If the slave-owning father did not claim paternity, the child was a slave as well.

Thomas Sowell caused a bit of a firestorm when he published his research on the slave trade out of Africa a few years back. He directly contradicted the mythology Alex Haley attempted to create with "Roots".

What is antisemitic about pointing out who owned the boats? The hypocrisy is amazing when considering percentage wise, some of the largest slave owners were in fact Jewish and the largest transporters of slaves were Jewish as well.

Jews hold this quasi white-non-white hybrid place in society where they can choose from which side they claim based on what gives them the most benefit. They use claims of “us whites are to blame for…insert what ever anti white trope is popular at the time”. While using cries of antisemitism to deflect and hold themselves free of blame for any previous actions of their race or religion or whatever they choose.

Why do you people always post the same pic of the whipped slave? If slavery was as terrible as you claim, why is it always the same picture?

It's like you people always bringing up Emmitt Till. You latch onto 1 story while ignoring the thousands that don't match your narrative.

Fact: The majority of slaves were treated well in the US. The death toll was much lower than anywhere else in the world for slaves.

If slaves were treated so horribly, why did so many take their master's name and choose to continue working along side them after the war? Not taking their name is such an easy way to distance yourself from the horrors, right? Surely black people are smart enough to come up with family name that wasn't shared by their oppressor.

Honestly, was there any other race with the power to do that at the time other than whites?

good point

So whites did it when they did not have to.

Did they do it because the black Africans supplying the slaves quit supplying them it?

Thanks for the link... looks like the scarred man's master was black and won the right to turn his scarred indentured servant into a lifetime slave. Does this change anything for Relentless?

The Greeks and Romans had an advantage over the Americans. Some of their slaves were intellectuals of the conquered nation. So they put them in charge of teaching their children. A lot of their leaders were taught by slaves. We couldn't do that with Africans.

Nope.

The Guilt Trip will be here until the End of Time.

It's a carefully manufactured and curated agent of decomposition of the structure.

Of course slavery existed elsewhere, but the Atlantic slave trade was a truly booming business. It became particularly pernicious in the Western Hemisphere.

In any event, there is no defense for the buying and selling of human beings like chattel. It was a horrendous institution in America with lasting effects.
Instead of ignoring it, American history should fully explore it and the bloody, successful struggle to end it.

I'd rather like to explore how human trafficking- taking place everywhere, including USA, is so very similar to slavery. Slavery didn't end, it changed names.

there were practically no white people capturing black people and putting them in slavery.

Common sense played a huge factor in this decision.

quote:

The specific agents who managed the trading of goods for enslaved people on the African coast were generally known as “factors”.

These individuals were established at coastal forts or trading posts (also called "factories") by European trading companies, such as the Royal African Company.

The system of using a resident factor, who often lived on or near the coast for extended periods, was indeed a strategic measure. This allowed ship captains and most of their crews to minimize their time exposed to diseases like malaria and yellow fever prevalent in the coastal regions, which were often fatal to Europeans who had no immunity.

The captains would primarily stay with their vessels offshore and send a small part of the crew and sometimes the ship's surgeon (doctor) to shore to inspect and purchase the enslaved people, who were held in pens called barracoons while waiting for the ships. The factor expedited this process by having already acquired the "cargo" from local African dealers and leaders in exchange for trade goods like textiles, alcohol, and guns.
