Hunting drones is more akin to hunting waterfowl. Recommend a 12ga shotgun, vs rifle.

Shotgun would be completely ineffective at the altitude they're flying at. You would need at least a 30-06, preferably a 50 caliber.
However, shooting at one with a shotgun would probably have the same effect. You would find out real quick like that our government is behind this.

3” mag with choke should be good if you consider the light weight plastic they use. A single BB could take it down. Better spread.
But your point remains. If they are at altitude it won’t get there.

Lead that goes up does not defy gravity. But, that being said, if government officials either state or federal know something they had best say what they know. They are not protecting any secrets at this point

They are commenting on the debris of a car sized drone plummeting to the ground in populated areas. Obviously the government knows something or they would be in pure panic, most likely either it’s them or they are working with them. That said a bunch of 15-18 year olds should have been already been trying because some 4-5 decades ago I know the bunch of hooligans I knew would have been made this a priority as a trophy hunt.
