ONOZ - Texas Covid is on Fire - Sensationalist Headlines

Just continuing to show the agenda of local media and buffoons in charge of Houston
The headline
The actual buried data
So now we are ranking all the way to the 28th in order... And as anyone with common sense can put together, who gives a shite about positivity rates if total cases are declining.
If you test 20 people and 10 test positive, you’re at 50% positivity, which sounds horrible, but you only have 10 new cases which isn’t shite.
But wait... Here is the agenda

The headline

The state's COVID-19 positive test rate on Thursday reached the second-highest rate since the pandemic began, according to a Houston Chronicle analysis of state data. For the second day in a row, the rate jumped and is now at 17.05 percent.

Local health authorities and public officials have repeatedly said that they want Houston's positive test rate to decrease to about 5 percent before reopening schools or scaling back any stay-home measures.

Solution? Stop testing. Then the positive rate drops to 0%.
You’re welcome, Houston.

It has relevance because the higher the number the more likely there are undiagnosed carriers. The problem is there are so many factors that create a moving target (increase in public awareness, testing availability, contact tracing advancements) that you can’t really come up with an accurate number that is acceptable.

Sounds good to me, take away the media’s fear mongering tactics

It’s funny that you haven’t heard a single word about hospital or ICU capacity in the past 3 weeks...

Those are two different figures. Percent of tests which is positive and raw numbers of positive tests aren't measures of the same thing.

Yeah, basing reopening on positivity rates makes zero sense whatsoever. It should be based on total cases.
One person in TX gets tested for smallpox. Tests positive. "OMG the positivity rate for smallpox in TX is 100%!!!!!"
BTW, who the frick is getting tested who doesn't feel sick? I'm sure some people are, but you can't use test positivity rates as an accurate measure of how widespread the virus is. You're working with a skewed sample of people who most likely are feeling unwell. I doubt many people who feel fine are taking time out of their days to get tested. It's stupid, especially considering you could test negative one day and then catch the virus the next day.

Everyone's gonna get it and until we reach herd immunity we will continue to see these headlines. I don't even care anymore about the numbers anymore. We long ago flattened the curve and kept hospitals from being over run. Its all a bunch of crap IMO.

The problem is I don’t trust the testing centers inane way shape or form to be effective or honest. They need this to keep going to stay in business, so I would t be surprised if they are pulling what those Florida testing centers were and not sending in all the negatives in.
Just sad.

The OP's suggestion is "Aha! They buried this other figure which undermines the first figure!" But they don't undermine each other, they are different figures which are not correlative.

There is no "accurate" number that is acceptable. The "acceptable" number is COMPLETELY arbitrary and (apparently) subject ONLY to the discretion of specific government leaders. THAT is the problem with the whole charade.

Or test everyone and it drops the positive rate AND shows what an overreaction we have had to this thing looks like...
