re: One in the chamber or not?

Secured in a quality holster the gun will not fire itself. Learn and practice your draw stroke. Pay attention to returning to the holster. An assailant inside 30 ft can reach you faster than you realize. That second to chamber a round may very well not exist. All of this being said, I was just like you when I started. It takes time to adjust to the idea for some. Seek more training.

What kind of safety(s) does it have? My Springfield XD9sc has 2, trigger and grip safeties. I have no qualms carrying with the gun in battery.

One in the chamber. My only exception is a pump shotgun

Secured on the console or laying there? The reason I ask is because what happens to the firearm if you are involved in a wreck?

This is my set up.
Chambered. Then transferred to IWB (Black Arch Holsters). Get an IWB that has Kydex protecting the trigger.
My gun, Springfield XD-S has a grip safety - must be engaged in order to activate trigger.

Agree with you except “clear the round, pop the magazine out”.
Remove mag, THEN clear round.
It may be a nit I pick, but if you release the slide with the mag in you just rechambered.

One thing that might get you more comfortable is to practice like the instructor said. But maybe carry a pistol that is a double action first pull and then single action after that.
That pull on the trigger for the 1st round is like a revolver.

Did you drill into steering wheel column? I tried the very best tape I could find, cleaned with alcohol before applying and both times, I found my pistol on the floor board a few days later.
I suspect it was due to the heat inside my vehicle when off.

I switched to magnets drilled in. Just use the tape to hold in place while the screws are put in. More economical and you don't have to waste a decent rig if you have multiple vehicles.
That tape doesn't work in the south with the heat.

Yes, I agree. I was reluctant to drill into my vehicle as it is still new. I chose a different option from Gum Creek Holsters. See pictures above.

I always have one in the chamber and I appendix carry.
You do not have time to load a round in a life or death situation in nearly all conceal carry situations.
Don't believe me? Go watch the active self protection channel on YouTube.
You'll never carry without a round in the chamber after watching a few of his videos.

Not only one in the chamber. But I had this conversation with an Officer. After recalling an incident in St Petersburg, Fl.
Black Kid broke into a Condo. Elderly couple arrived from grocery store. Wife in first, husband carrying groceries. Black Kid attacked the wife, husband dropped the groceries, got his gun and put two into the perp. Laid the gun on the floor and went to care for his wife. Kid woke, picked up the gun and put one into the back of the husbands head.
Cop told me ..."Whatever is in your magazine ....put them all into the attacker. When questioned your response is...In the excitement and stress of the situation, I fired until the gun would fire no more."

How do you do it today as a LEO? God bless you man but I just don’t see how you do it.

Yeah. Nothing wrong with you option it is what is most comfortable, kinda like which holster or style/type of carry. I prefer my firearm to be next to my right leg where it is hidden from view and a more natural motion if needed.
I will leave the magnet when I get rid of the vehicle, so drilling doesn't bother me.

Did you go with base model? Those along with the P320 are nice.
M17 variant has an external thumb safety and longer barrel, but wouldn’t be as ideal to carry.

I don’t understand why this is a concern with today’s double action automatics. I get the concern with the “cocked and locked” scenario in the 1911 single action scenario but the chance for an unintentional discharge with a chambered round in a double action auto with the hammer down is essentially zero.

/\ THIS /\ is my mantra - will never pull to threaten.
But - I carry a 357 magnum revolver - 5 shots - cylinder full.
I also have a 40 cal semi-auto, but I keep that at home. My fear with using that as my carry weapon, when I got home, I'd probably pop the magazine out - and IF DISTRACTED at the time MAY leave the one in the chamber. I feel that at home I would have a few seconds to retrieve and arm the weapon - don't expect to wake-up instantaneously to a life threatening situation.
Out in public, if I see a threat develop, I will mentally prepare for a defense response, but will not produce my weapon until there is no other choice. If I pull it out in that situation I fully intend to shoot within a second. Don't want any unnecessary activity that will slow that down. At home, I figure I will have several seconds to retrieve, arm, and have it ready while I ponder if I need to shoot or not.
