I don't thing the checkpoints are new. Before the war there were checking to see if people were following Sharia law and stuff like that. Proper cloth etc.! Now I would imagine the checkpoint are a bit more focused on looking for mossad etc. but they have never stopped being for sharia law and other stuff like that.
