I wonder if the unimproved runway was too short to land the C130 with the little birds inside but they didn’t care because they had to have the little birds for the op. They may have known there was a good shot they would run out of runway and end up in the sand trap.
They brought in different planes to get out which may have been able to stop and turn around on a shorter runway. May have been an acceptable loss to complete the mission from the planning stage and not necessarily a surprise.

I don't know the whole story yet.
But a C-130 is not a small plane. It may have landed OK and then the nose wheel/other gear sunk deeper from sitting there for a while.
Pure speculation on my part but something kind of similar happened when a Boeing 737 in 1988 emergency landed on a levee near New Orleans and it was kind of a rush to get the engines fixed and get it back in the air as it was sinking into the ground.
It is wild that a decision was made so quickly to get smaller planes and then consider the Hercs and the baby birds a lost cause and blow them up in place.

Trump would be wise to put the onus on them instead of us/him when it comes to his ultimatum. Strike an obscure power plant or refinery at 8pm on the dot tomorrow to show them we're serious if concessions haven't been made, then very publicly warn them:
We've struck ____ at will, with zero resistance, and we can do that all over your country. We will leave your entire country in the dark and in the cover of that dark, we will arm the citizens using our elite Intel agencies and spies.
Thousands are without power currently, but we will help them regain their comfort immediately if you step down and allow free and fair elections and open shipping in the strait of Hormuz
This is only a small taste of what we can do to you
For every ship you attack or hold up in the strait, we demolish another power plant
For every ballistic missile you launch, we demolish another

It needs to happen. Anyone with two brain cells knows that it’s the only way Iran will be changed for the better.
