Before any such land war could happen, we’d first have to stage a ground force adjacent to Iran. And by ground force, I’m not talking about a single division (someone mentioned 10th Mtn. Div.) or Marine Expeditionary Force. Iran is a big fricking country, like twice the size of Iraq. An invasion of Iran would require an even larger force than the one I was deployed in during Desert Storm 35 years ago. We’re talking the entirety of III, VII, and XIII Corps at the least plus multiple reserve and national guard units ranging from combat support to full infantry divisions, a force of hundreds of thousands of “boots” on the ground. And that’s not even counting the additional air and naval forces needed to support such a force. It would take months to assemble such a force and very public calling up a deployment of literally hundreds of units from armories across the nation, none of which have happened as of this morning.
So, if there was going to be “boots on the ground” in any role more than maybe Special Ops operations like we did in Venezuela a few weeks ago, the preparations to put those boots in place would have had to have started months ago.
