Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana after it gained independence in 1960, seems to be the inspiration for this originally. He was a Pan-Africanist and Marxist-Leninist that's held in high regard in the African studies world.

He was also an authoritarian dictator with a horrible human rights record towards his own people. So bad that they ran him out of his country in 1966.

The "intellectual" anti-colonial activists like Madani's parents seem to overlook this aspect of his leadership and hold him up as some sort of beacon of "liberation" for black and brown people.
