Note to self: Don't mess with Bill Ackman

Bill Ackman ran the pressure to expose Harvard's DEI president.
Business Insider decided to go after his wife. He's going scorched earth. Bolding and emojis are mine.

My only regret is Taylor Lorenz wasn't the "journalist".

My wife, @NeriOxman, was just contacted by Business Insider claiming that they have identified other plagiarism in her work including 15 examples in her dissertation where she did not cite Wikipedia as a source.![]()
Business Insider told us that they are publishing their story this evening. As a result, we don't have time to research their claims prior to publication.
It is unfortunate that my actions to address problems in higher education have led to these attacks on my family.
This experience has inspired me to save all news organizations from the trouble of doing plagiarism reviews.
We will begin with a review of the work of all current @MIT faculty members, President Kornbluth, other officers of the Corporation, and its board members for plagiarism.
We will be using MIT's own plagiarism standards which can be found here:

We will share our findings in the public domain as they are completed in the spirit of transparency.
My only regret is Taylor Lorenz wasn't the "journalist".

While you're at it, maybe you could look at instances of plagiarism at business insider.

Business Insider is so f'ing out of touch with reality they've gone and opened a can of reverse whoop arse on themselves. Let's try and frick over one of the most wealthy people on the planet with a money talks, bullshite walks, take no prisoners attitude. The Editorial Board of unsavy Business Insiders must have all been MBA graduates of the Mickey Mouse School of Business.

A few questions:
[img]How can one defend oneself against an accusation of plagiarizing Wikipedia for a dissertation written 15 years ago in 2009?
Isn’t the whole point of Wikipedia that it is a dynamic source of info that changes minute by minute based on edits and contributions from around the globe?[/img]
Has anyone (other than my wife) ever been accused of plagiarism based on using Wikipedia for a definition of a word?
Is Wikipedia copyrighted? If so which version? The most recent one? The previous version?
Is it plagiarism when you use an online dictionary for a definition of a word or term?
How can one defend oneself when one learns about a 12-page plagiarism accusation at 540pm on Friday night when one celebrates Shabbat and you are told the article would be published shortly, in this case at 7:10pm?
He should see when Wiki was edited. I wonder if BI added the wording just for this article.

He also uncovered some shady tax breaks by a chairman at MIT.

Bit of advice for anyone who may be needing it... It is generally a poor choice to piss in the cheerios of anyone who has the time and means to be petty. And not just kind of petty, enough time and money to be really really really petty.
You should dose your FAFO appropriately.

I'm guessing it'll be hard to show that the Wikipedia entry was there prior to a 2009 dissertation.
Some of this plagiarism stuff is overblown - there's only so many ways to say that XYZ is the most influential legislation of the Nixon era and similar stuff.
I suspect this is going to spawn a vicious cycle and there's about to be around 1 million faculty members and high profile people around the world accused of plagiarism. My guess is that the majority of those instances are failure to cite, particularly in older documents that were made prior to citation software and so forth.

Just so I'm understanding here, Bill Ackerman is mad that BI is claiming that his wife committed plagiarism. The exact same thing that he claimed Harvard's president did.
And he's mad that they didn't give him and his wife time to respond before publishing? Did he give the Harvard prez time to respond before going forward with his claims?

Seems you are mad he’s going after your fellow progstains.

Maybe you should do a little better in learning about what you’re talking about before you consider making a statement. First of all it’s not a he but a she that was the president. The simple things matter

I know most people don't like Dave Portnoy, but he's had issues with Business Insider for years.
But even before this came to light, Portnoy was one of the ones screaming for MIT to do something about Gay and after it happened, he said in an interview that Ackman was the reason the scrutiny gained legs and that he would never want to be on Ackman's bad side.
I imagine those two will team up and throw big $$$ behind shuttind down business insider and exposing MIT.

No, I didn't see anything indicating that he is mad. You can refuse to be cancelled without getting mad. He doesn't seem any more mad than I would be if I crushed an annoying spider in my kitchen.

A couple of things:
1. Harvard's president committing plagiarism is pretty much a fact at this point. There's no "claiming" about it. Not anymore. Over 50 documented incidences.
2. Ackman is an alum and has donated 10s of millions of dollars to Harvard. He has a legitimate personal interest in the academic integrity of his alma mater. What legitimate interest does Business Insider have in his wife's academic integrity?
Cancelling someone because they successfully made the left look bad isn't a legitimate interest, btw.
The one thing I will say about this is that I predicted that a whole lot of professors and administrators in academia were going to be shaking in their boots over this and that it was about to become the new attack weapon. The thing I was wrong about was how quickly it was going to happen. I predicted within 9 months. It was a lot closer to 9 days.

Ackman is a Harvard alumnus and Gay was the president at Harvard. The presidents of MIT and UPenn were also involved in the Congressional testimony deal, and so have a similar issue.
