No more LA State Income tax (a la Texas)??

"Broadly speaking, the goal is to create a tax structure similar to the one in Texas and push more money and authority from Baton Rouge to the local level. Nelson said he was trying to fix problems that started during the 1930s under former governor and senator Huey Long, whose goal was to centralize power in the state Capitol so that “if anybody wanted to pay for anything in Louisiana, you had to come here and beg for it.”"
I, for one, am in favor of it. Of course, the bill if passed, would expose more previously undetected ineptitudes. Headwinds predicted. Taking power away from people in BR who define themselves by telling other people what to do is a daunting task.

Needs to happen.
Likely won’t happen because they would seriously need to unfrick the state tax code to pull it off.

And have to sell the public on accepting significantly increased property taxes, which have been notoriously low historically throughout most of the state, in conjunction with the Homestead Exemption and a lot of 'wink and nod' local assessments.

I 100 percent agree that Louisiana needs to ditch the state income tax(which should be illegal anyway) & take the power out of Baton Rouge & go to a more localized parish government. The problem is there are also a bunch of idiots at the local levels as well & property taxes will have to increase.
We have major issues with property taxes in Texas that increase every year as values go up.

I understand how "no state income tax" sells well.
But if a state has to raise X revenue. I'd prefer sales and income taxes before property taxes.
Paying rent to the state is horrible.

you will trade state income tax and lower user tax(sales and fuel etc) for property tax.
In Louisiana this will spell disaster as we have do not have a property strong enough to support the state spending.
Unless they significantly reduce spending this will not fly

Yeah, but we all know that the Parish Assessor does not assess all properties in an equitable fashion.

Can't say for certain, but I'd be willing to bet that Rep. Nelson excelled at Algebra and Relative Mathematics.

This is the way to improvement. If it doesn’t pass it will be bc of ignorance. People in La have a stupefying reaction to property taxes and will need to be educated on local control.

I think the homestead exemption should not start at zero, but at say 25K. You pay propert takes on the first 25K of property value, then the next 50 or 75 or whatever is exempt, then anything above 100K (if the exemption is 75K) is taxed. It makes everyone who owns any property have some skin in the game. It doesn’t by itself create any additional tax burden on people who own property worth more than 100K because they still get the benefit of the entire exemption.

Two reasons this will never happen.
1. Louisiana is all about spoils systems. Eliminating income taxes would decimate the tax credit giveaway system by drastically limiting their funding mechanisms.
2. Local taxes would have to increase after burdens are shifted from state to locals. Boomers would lose their shite.

If only we had a Republican governor to sign it.

I 100% support this bill!!!!!! Everybody should.

Wrong. We absolutely can do this.
We have billions in untaxed property between ITEP and the homestead exemption.
The state will be dramatically reducing spending and that will mean the parishes will have to decide if they want to replace the spending with taxes on themselves AS IT SHOULD BE.

It is a very interesting proposal and I am glad it is getting attention.
It won't get out of the house BUT years ago this would not have gotten out of committee.
This bill lays out some good goals. Just because we don't achieve them this year doesn't mean we don't continue to try. I really think if we get the right governor we can make a lot of progress.
