As Roger Goodell, Jerry Jones, and the NFL engage in an ugly internal fight over the future leadership of the NFL, TV partners at CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC are staring at their own internal conflicts — namely a substantial decline in NFL ratings that is on pace to cost the four networks up to $500 million in lost revenue.

Already several hundred million in lost revenue has been booked in 2017 and it has the league’s top executives and television partners scrambling to figure out what went wrong. How did a league that was setting ratings records in 2015 suddenly see its audience fall by nearly 20% just two years later.

Just the beginning, NFL has reached thier peak. Crap you see on field and young generation not watching games. They will play more games overseas to make up lost revenue.

Honestly I wanted to boycott after the first round of kneeling but I still put the saints on and maybe the MNF or SNF game.

Worse than the kneeling, is the shite product on the field. Refs are not consistent on penalties and a game based around heavy contact and tackling has been pussified.

If they haven't figured it out already, they should be preparing to lose more money.

Read it 2 weeks ago and there were multiple threads discussing it. Not trying to be a dick, just pointing out this article is not bringing new material to the table despite me agreeing with the premise

Good, let them burn.

The day players forgot they were nothing more than paid, although higher than most Americans, employees who work for a White man, is the day of their downfall.

I love it.

I read that they are not going to full break for commercials. During a timeout they go to split screen with the ad on 1/2 and the live field on the other 1/2.

Now the 3 hour broadcast has 15 more minutes of commercials. It's getting pretty close to a 3 hour commercial. The commercials are what ruin it more for me than anything else. They advertise in the dumbest ways possible, and I end up getting bored and change the channel to something else. Forget to go back to the game.

This isn't due to kneeling. Football due to CTE is slowly starting to lose some popularity. More and more parents are not allowing their kids to play football. Families tend to due more activities on weekends. The good ole days of watching football all day on Sunday with your dad is fading. Millenials who are starting to have families are less interested in the NFL and watching football on tv.

More and more families are doing club sports on weekends. Kids who play basketball or baseball or hockey now do it year-round with club sports which means weekends. High school sports are generally a weeknight thing with weekends for major tournaments. Friday night football meant Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon football watching. Expect the NFL to expand to Friday nights and multiple regional games on Sunday and Monday evenings.

There are many, many reasons.

1. No one wants politics in their sports

2. Middle of the road fans being told of long-term health issues on athletes probably aren't as keen on seeing bone-crunching hints

3. Product on the field has declined over the years

4. College football, in the same time frame, has gotten a playoff - removing a key component that NFL had that CFB did not

5. Prices consistently going up for tickets, concessions, and TV (in the case of TV, meaning more commercials)

There are many factors, not the least of which is the political mess the NFL has gotten embroiled in as of late.

It's also a bit cyclical. For the longest time baseball was the most popular sport. I wouldn't be surprised if basketball overtakes football as the most popular now.

Baseball was hugely popular in the late 90s when all the players were roided up and 60 hrs a year was common. I don't think the fans care about athletes destroying their bodies for our amusement.

I think a lot of fans were fooling themselves, believing that drugs weren't the case. Clearly that was wrong, but still... hard to think of your heroes are shoving needles in their arms to play a sport.

This is great for them

They really needed to make less so they could identify with the masses
