Read "One Second After". A novel about US power grid being taken out.
Scary stuff

Get your F150 Lightening. I'm sure you can siphon electricity out of the recharge station when things go to shite.

A compelling read. The series is outstanding.

We must not have enough diversity in the power grid.

I doubt that the US Govt has the competence to stop such an attack.

After the government shuts down the power grid for a week

Do you have any idea what would happen if they shut it down for a week? Depending on how they did it, (assuming incompetence because duh) the initial shut down and misalignment of phases could seriously wreck stuff to where we wouldnt get it back for months. And if that happens?

LOLZ. LOLZ. LOLZ.

I think we lose 5% of the population in the first month. And not from hunger or some such. But heart attacks and diabetes and the already infirmed relying on power. Would be a goddamn nightmare.

The Energy Secretary is an absolute idiot.

Not one of these morons has ever been in the IEEE Cyber Security Committee meetings.

Including the vast number of idiots writing about the grid daily. If you don't know STHU .....

If the conditions are right for a cascade event ...Maybe, just maybe, a section of the country can go off line. The last time the east went down was due to tree branch and Generator Relays being set wrong. The only thing that saved the northeast were the hydro's. The Hydro's were used to restart the fossil fuel plants that went down.

Name one incursion into a distribution grid .....the only one I can recall was Calpine in California (Power Producer) There have been others but nothing as noteworthy as Calpine. Yet Calpine was central office intrusion, not one power plant affected. The reason for not centralizing the grid is simple. These are private entities considering themselves to be competitors. The reason they are called IOU's Investor Owned Utilities. They don't share inside information ....thus they use different communication languages and use separate products. Many Power Plants will have ABB and Beckwith Electric Generation Protection relays, separate manufacturers, used to back each other up. The combo can be Schweitzer (SEL) and Beckwith or ABB. Some have sold out to one brand one manufacturer. To break in you cannot give a simple command to shut down ...you have to know the language system of the program then the language of the relay and know exactly what has to be done to take one plant off line ....now duplicate that over and over to try and shut down an entire grid.

The idiocy of the simple minded boneheaded Politician spewing this crap is mind blowing.

The first Cyber security Committee meeting in IEEE included both producers and manufacturers ....the screaming that took place when the first engineer says "We should use one uniform connected system to protect the grid!

Manufacturers shot back "Good, one source to hack into and take the entire country down. Brilliant move."

He was over ruled....the idiot idea never got considered.

Hacking the plants themselves would be too time consuming.

A system operator however.....Like SPP, MISO, etc. Well, thats where things would get really interesting. Especially if its a true home cooking special. IE you'd have access to the control room and the emergency call outs.

What she is really saying is that they are capable of shutting down areas that disagree with them.

The control rooms do not run the power plant ....

They simply monitor.

Of course nothing has been done. The same people responsible for hardening the power grid are the same people that have been planning on taking it down.

BS

IEEE has members from every Utility and runs that show.

. I have never seen a Government Official in over 20 years of meetings....

The government has no control over Cyber Security within the Power System....

I didn’t mean to imply they would hack anything, Bombs are easier.

A specific major power generating and distribution system in one area has hired middle easterners (Think "Imran Awan" type) to run their IE department which has access to the controls of their Nuclear and Fossil fuel generating plants as well as all of their distribution system and network interconnection infrastructure. Sounds like a death wish to me. The opportunities for sabotage are endless and the potential profits for selling the system to our enemies are boundless.
