re: New York bill would ban AI from answering questions related to medicine, law, dentistry.

The lower tier billable hour is fricked (doc review, research, deposition summaries, etc.). Young law students trying to funnel big law are going to potentially be in for a rude awakening.
Lots of hourly lawyering is fricked
I used AI for trial prep for a trial I just had Monday. The ability to do the file organization and create charts to create a cross reference for deposition testimony, exhibits, and questions was insane.
It did a reasonable job of creating depo summaries in minutes.
Saved my client literally thousands of dollars
The hourly law firm system that bakes this billing into their model is not going to remain ethical for much longer.
And yes, my client signed an authorization and the AI system is closed, not used to train other models, etc.

You should have your AI Agent post your endless pseudo intellectual drivel here so you can drop the fries instead of vice-versa.

How can you be certain?

The TOS with the provider. It's quoted in the authorization I wrote for clients, too.
There are lots of AI options created for lawyers (I presume other industries too but I don't get vendor emails for those industries) that are closed models. They buy/create an AI model then create an ecosystem around it.
Like the research vendors Westlaw and Lexis Nexis. Both have their own propriety AI you can pay for (it's a subscription tier). I'm about 99.9% sure those are closed (I don't use them but it's necessary for a third party vendor). I don't use those because they're ridiculously expensive (lawyers are idiots when it comes to being sold overpriced products), but they're the two most common.
I just started using Claude so I need to look. Claude is at the testing stage so it's not authorized in my agreement and I'm not using any client stuff there. Just general legal testing. I am going to try to see if Claude can create a clone of my LPM app I built using another vibe coding offering. It's supposed to be amazing at coding things.
What I worry about from the ethical see standpoint is the forced AI stuff, primarily Office 365 and Copilot. I didn't ask for Copilot but I use Windows and 365 (like basically every lawyer) so I'm engaged with it.

Those are fields where AI would be very useful. Being able to pour through tons of data to reach conclusions is one of the real benefits of AI.
I’d love to be able to drop 5 years of blood work into AI and have it give me an analysis beyond my GP’s “eh, everything looks fine”.

Claude is already a way better lawyer than most senior associates and a better legal writer than most lawyers I’ve worked with at any level.
In my experience it's more like a recent grad that finished top of it's class, that said this time last year it was more like a great high school student I'd say it's making progress quickly

It sounds like a lot of hourly anything is in trouble. I’m sure Elon and Congress will provide enough UBI slop for everyone.

I never relied on hourly much (both because I work too fast and refused to just do unnecessary stuff to make it +EV and it costs too much in accounting resources) but I saw this AI stuff coming a few years ago and intentionally shifted my focus to areas I'm not as happy doing but are much more AI-proof.
I'm looking into a few other areas where flat fees can work and AI is less of a threat. I just have to get through a busy March (possibly April) and start reading up.
This does remind me I have depos Monday on a case where I was hired by the insurer as conflict counsel. I need to start uploading my intakes to the Lexis system. I need to look at that this weekend.

Maybe anecdotal but I’ve heard insurance carriers are hiring a lot more attorneys in house. I guess if this is the future it doesn’t make as much sense to have 200 panel firms.

They've been doing that in LA for a while now.
I've never fully understood the inefficiencies of the insurance defense model from the POV of the insurance company (at least in LA). They lose so much and still have to pay the claims, and it just seems they light a ton of money on fire with an incredibly low success rate. And I'm talking all the small claims.
The big ones? Sure defend away.

Time is money. Simple as that. That and I think some of them don’t want to be seen as easy to pay out by the Plaintiff’s bar.

All you have to do is get a good VPN, act like your in another state, and ask away.

AI won't be conducting trials anytime soon.
