They have a better chance of balancing the budget by putting all the chips on black or red than any ideas those leaders have.

My family and I just went there. Had a great time and stayed in the Quarter. Almost had to KO an angry, unwell man on the rail car in the garden district heading back to Canal, but there were police and guardsmen all through the Quarter. I also went in the Fall for an LSU game...stayed in NO and drove to and from the game without a problem.

Compare the number of Fortune 500 companies in the city now vs. forty years ago.
Relying on tourism and shipping alone is setting up for catastrophe.

New Orleans never recovered from the oil bust in the 80s. The climate over the last 20 years hasn't helped lure any big companies here. I don't know what the answer or fix is but I sure do love New Orleans.

Lived there for quite a while but moved to JP. Like any city, I think common sense and not being a gang member will help you avoid 99% of crime. I get it is hard for tourist to call it a day at a reasonable hour and the most fun occurs in some dangerous spots but being generally aware of your surroundings should keep you safe.

I'm raising a family here. My parked car was stolen from my driveway a few years ago but that's the only crime I've experienced first-hand here. I went to high school in the city and hung out here a lot in college, too. Bought our house here 10 years ago.

We left NO in 1970 after being assaulted by "students" from Warren Easton.

Well, the current administration is far more competent and forward thinking than the previous one, so I’m a little more optimistic. Right now they’re having to deal with the mess left behind
by Latoya and her cronies…

Went to St. Thomas in 1984. Remember the cab driver saying welcome to us and explaining that the problems of the natives of St. Thomas being rude to tourists as a protest against conditions was over. The tourists had stopped coming and the local economy crashed and the people got to think about what they had caused for a while. The cabbie said "the people now understand where their bread is buttered" .

The reason that New Orleans was founded as a port city at the mouth of the Mississippi, is for the most part gone. They are a tourist destination. The "people" just need to be reminded of that fact. It's too bad welfare doesn't let that sink in as deeply as it needs to.

I have to ask but was your car unlocked and/or a key fob left in the car. Studies show that is the majority of car thefts these days (and probably higher since most victims never want to admit either). Gen Z car thieves are mostly incompetent and typically go after the lowest hanging fruit. Or a hyundai or kia

It wasn't as nice then as it was when I visited in 1968.

Don't be out on Bourbon Street or wandering the Quarter after midnight, and the odds are you'll be fine. Odds go down a little after midnight in the Quarter. For sure. I always tell friends to Uber everywhere after 10PM. You want to go to another bar a few blocks away? Uber. Walking back to your hotel from the Quarter to the business district after midnight? Uber.

It wasn't a Hyundai or a Kia and it was locked. I have it on video. He walked up to my locked car, opened the door, turned on the ignition and drove away. Took like 10 seconds.

It was a vehicle that required turning a key to start, too. No clue how he did it. People speculated that he had some sort of master key or something. Teenagers.

I'm sure the former mayor taking those "business trips" to Paris didn't help.

I truly believe that potential mayors of Democratic shitholes like NOLA look at the job as a get rich scheme for themselves, as they know there is no hope of actually turning the city around.

Everyone in any position of power in that city has been on the take for several decades now.

The Port is busy and is experiencing strong growth in cargo, with container volumes up 2% in early 2025 following record years, handling over 600,000 TEUs annually and maintaining low congestion.

This isn't unique to New Orleans. Look at our governor.
