I focus on the part I love and have always loved the most: the games themselves. I used to watch SportsCenter religiously and follow the "outside the lines" sports news but have largely quit that altogether. I am sure the (one-sided) politicization is a big reason why. But I still love the games themselves.

Oh, this part I get 100%. I feed this fix by watching old games on YouTube, channels like JonBoy with baseball highlights (not because of any players today but because of the topics and the breakdowns of plays/calls, etc) or channels like Basketball Time Machine. I miss SPORTS, but don't miss current players, games, teams, etc of that makes sense.

I want to let them know they can, if they want. Just takes the desire to do it. After all, we're talking about wants, and not needs here.

I'm with you on this point. That's a much more reasonable tenor than calling someone who consumes such an idiot or whatever. For me, sports is not only my favorite pastime, it's also my preferred way to connect with people in general. Folks with whom I'd likely never interact under any other circumstances. That's magical for me, and now I'm getting to form some cool sports bonds with my kids, as well. It'll always be a big part of my life, politics of the participants notwithstanding.
