Right - Nader is relevant to Eric Prince Russia backchannels and Joel Zamel/social media manipulation and the UAE attempt to get Trump to push out Rex Tillerson. I'm not sure where Mueller is drawing lines between investigations.

“the grand bargain”

From The New Yorker,

quote:

During a private meeting shortly before the November, 2016, election, Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, floated to a longtime American interlocutor what sounded, at the time, like an unlikely grand bargain. The Emirati leader told the American that Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, might be interested in resolving the conflict in Syria in exchange for the lifting of sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

quote:

The special counsel, Robert Mueller, and his F.B.I. team, tasked with probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, have been investigating whether the U.A.E. facilitated contacts between Trump’s team and Russian officials and sought to influence U.S. politics. Nine days before Trump’s Inauguration, Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater and a confidant of Steve Bannon, met at M.B.Z.’s resort in the Seychelles with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, whom the Emiratis used as a go-between with Putin

quote:

Mueller’s team has also focussed on Trump transition-team meetings in December, 2016, that involved Emirati and Russian officials. One, at a New York hotel, was attended by M.B.Z., and another, at Trump Tower, was attended by Sergey Kislyak, then Russia’s Ambassador in Washington. During the December 1, 2016, meeting between Kislyak and Trump’s transition team, both sides wanted to discuss the conflict in Syria, and the Russian Ambassador proposed arranging a conversation between Michael Flynn, the incoming national-security adviser, and people he referred to as his “generals,” according to congressional testimony by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser. To prevent intelligence agencies from eavesdropping on the conversation, Kislyak proposed using a “secure line,” prompting Kushner to suggest using the secure communications gear housed at the Russian Embassy in Washington.

Surely we’re not concerned with discussions during the transition period. That would be absurd.

Occam’s Razor (based on what we know)

SCO has been investigating Saudi/UAE activity in the 2016 election and its nexus with the Russian activity.

Whether there was a grand bargain...it’s good to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism but something like that *could* explain a lot of other things that happened around the same time frame...MbS power play in the Kingdom, the Qatar blockade, etc., all seemingly having tacit approval from the White House.

One part of this investigation that we have very little visibility into.

Marcy Wheeler's source told her that Flynn was talking to the Syrians after the election and she says the FBI was very interested to hear it:

Well, none of us know the substance of what is being investigated. If the time period of the activity extended into the transition, that may well be relevant.

Why would the FBI have any jurisdiction in all of this as it applies to the Syrian situation?

What would be so wrong with Flynn talking to the Syrians as NSA designate?

Why would Mueller dust off a federal statute that has never been effectively used in over 200 years.....Logan Act

There is nothing wrong with setting up back channels between governments, it's been done since the early days of the Cold War

I'm not seeing crimes here.

That would set an entirely new precedent for incoming administrations. I wouldn't be shocked to see that sort of thing go before SCOTUS for an official ruling.

Correct and Mueller indicted a political consultant named Sam Patten on a FARA violation related to directing Ukrainian money into Trump's inauguration fund. Patten's worked with Cambridge Analytica for quite some time:

quote:

Mr. Patten also had a yearslong business relationship with Cambridge Analytica, the political data firm that worked on Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign. Starting in 2014, the firm used Mr. Patten as a consultant for election campaigns and other projects in Africa, Europe and the United States, according to a person with direct knowledge of his activities.

Yeah, except Kush apparently wanted to run it through the Russian embassy.

WTF would any of that have to do with the election? Trump's transition people can talk to who they please.

If they go after him they would have to go back and go after every other President in the modern era.

Good questions all. Backchannels are ok. Backchannels to conspire against the US via 18 USC 371 are not (just my hunch that they're looking into this as part of an investigation of quid pro quo in an election conspiracy).
