Dude had probably spent a large part of his life in crime and running from the cops. He had a long list of criminal activity and knew he had a warrant, and knew once the cops had him he was going to prison, probably for a long time due to repeat offenses.
So, instead of going to prison, the mindset is "fight or run," thinking 'no way they will shoot me' the entire time, and 'Id rather die then go to prison.'

Well this is the dumbest post in this thread. Cops deal with criminals on a daily basis. They were called to the situation because the man was waiving a knife around. He told them he was going to go and get his gun out of the car and shoot them. You cant possibly be so stupid that you think they should have waited to see if he was gonna follow thru with his threat?
