Musicians are only allowed to espouse liberal talking points, Beach Boys version

This is a music/concert critique of "The Beach Boys" live show, which is really just 85-year-old Mike Love.
It's a pretty negative review, which is fine. He's probably too old to be still touring and the show probably sucked. But this fig at Slate (yea, I know) tried to make it about MAGA, even though Love never mentioned politics and never brought up Trump or anything else during the show. But he, gasp, has supported Trump in the past and even had the gall to play at Mar A Lago.
And even worse, The Beach Boys are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States and, horror of horrors, have American flag themed surfboards as their logo.

The Beach Boy and his dark MAGA turn
quote:
The first song of the night was the minor 1968 hit “Do It Again”—a track written to resuscitate the band’s breezy sun-worshipping image after several challenging years. Love looked sallow and enfeebled; legs stiff, arms flat by his side. When he opened his mouth to sing, his once resonant tenor was reduced to a whisper, all warbled, strange, and barely there, decimated by the encumbering decades. My friend shot me an ashen look, the same one I remember him giving me during the opening salvo of the doomed Joe Biden debate.
quote:
And so, like many other infamous cranks who are nonetheless desperate to be treasured by the public, Love eventually found refuge in the MAGA movement. His incarnation of the Beach Boys hosted a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s campaign in 2020, and they played a dedicatory concert at Mar-a-Lago shortly after the president’s victory in 2024. (Unsurprisingly, Wilson and Jardine disavowed the endorsement.) With Love’s hippie mien and penchant for Eastern spirituality, he never looked or sounded like an America First patriot—but those partisans, as they often do, were quick to embrace him anyway. Love was a guest of honor at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2022, and ever the opportunist, he has slyly nudged the Beach Boys brand in a more nativist direction to fit the taste of the last fans he’ll ever make. This most recent tour is billed as a celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States. Its poster features two star-spangled surfboards superimposed on the Declaration of Independence.

And this is why entertainers are so vocally “left”. Not because they care about politics so much but because if they leave any room for interpretation they will be skewered by the prog trash which encompasses 95% of media. It’s a protection racket and instead of weekly payment, you compensate by spewing leftist talking points.

Liberals in general are just unfun people.
EVERYTHING is politics for them.
EVERYTHING is politics for them.

The Beach Boys are a great American band.
End of story.
Yes, they are old. Yes some have left us, but we still have their music.
It will never die.

There was no more American band than the Beach Boys.

I saw the Beach Boys at the Superdome when I was attending Tulane in the 80's. Tulane played USL and as an incentive to get people to come, the Beach Boys played at halftime.

Livenation and Ticketmaster hold a monopoly over all government owned concert venues, most festivals, and virtually any concert venue over 400 person capacity. If an artist pisses them off, they essentially are locked out of any gigs large enough to make touring profitable without some serious wheeling, dealing, and DIY’ing.
The mainstream labels have relationships with Ticketmaster and Livenation that allow them to effectively bully out true indie artists and keep them off of tours going through these venues. If one doesn’t conform to their label’s image, they will get dropped immediately unless the band has grown big enough to buck the label and negotiate with venues and Ticketmaster directly.
Very few bands have that sort of leverage, and even those that do know that it’s much easier to go along rather than fight the system.
The labels, livenation, and ticketmaster are objectively left-wing. If a band is not vocally left-wing, they run a high risk of getting dropped or shelved. There is such a glut of musicians (and so few true stars today) that there is always another up and comer or washed up has-been willing to play the game and to take their place.
The livenation and ticket master monopoly means that consumers have no choice but to support these companies if they want to see anything other than a local cover band or garage band, so there is no consumer pressure to change.

It’s not so much about getting hate on twitter as it is getting locked out of venues and booted from festival/tour lineups.
Imagine if you owned a business where you sold a product in retail stores like Wal-Mart and Target. Then, imagine if 95% of all retailers that you could ever possibly sell to (in person and online) had the exact same owner. Now, imagine that owner made it clear that any non-partisan or remotely right wing messaging by your business or anyone employed by your business on your personal accounts would result in them pulling your products off their shelves to the point that your only option to reach customers would be to build your own international chain of retail stores.
That is the level of collusion and extortion these artists are being forced to bend the knee to.

Did this same writer have anything to say about any of the washed up acts that played for the Obama's at his dumpster library?
I think it was U2, Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson?

Mike Love was the cousin. Al Jardine was the friend.

I've got an uncle (RIP) that went to school at Hawthorne High with Brian Wilson and Al Jardine. He hung out with them at Redondo Beach many times and in doing so he met Mike Love along the way. He always said those guys were really chill, and that they were seriously exactly what they sang and played about. The girls, the beach, and fun in the sun.
Just an aside.
Just an aside.

Anything that isn’t rigid adherence to progressive dogma gets you labeled as “far right” and you will be relegated to opening for Kid Rock and the guy from Staind.
I can see why artists who just want to do their thing go along to get along.
Obviously there are the true believers but I think the reality is that the vast majority just repeat the talking points to avoid retribution and career suicide.

I would imagine Mike Love at 85 doesn't give a shite.
