The default response would be that it's to follow marketing "best practices" to sell as many of the products as possible, which if so would by necessity include without alienating a significant portion of the populace.
But just a basic history of Madison Avenue as an archive for the behavioral modification techniques of Edward Bernays, along with otherwise being liberally populated by armchair, self-loathing, manipulative Kalergi-ists could possibly provide somewhat of a more accurate explanation for it.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend the fact she's young, pretty and white has no bearing on how big the story got.
But as others have pointed out. It's not like there aren't some stories that get extremely undue positive coverage for blacks also.
In the grand scheme of things, I think it would be fair to say that deifying black violent criminals who get killed by cops is more ridiculous than over covering a story about a pretty white girl who is not a violent criminal who was murdered.

It shouldn't be a national story, but it's more about Petito being attractive than being white. Screw Fox News for covering it as if it's of national importance.
