Imagine 20% of the elderly being wiped out wouldn't cause panic. That's 14 million dead in this country alone.

Why is this being left out?

That doesn’t mean 15-20 mortality in the general population.

I guess me and you are the only ones that understand.

Still poor reporting from MSNBC, they framed it that way so people who arent actually going to think about it, or look twice, will just say 15-20% of whole population.

Then he stokes more fear with this statement.

quote:

“I can say pretty much with certainty that each one of us, everyone in this country, knows someone with those underlying conditions,” he continued. “So this is not a political thing. It’s going to affect voters on the left, the right, and people that don’t even vote, so we need to take it seriously and even if you yourself are going to be okay, you still have the potential, and are infecting others that are not going to be okay.”

The elderly and underlying conditions demographic is the same demographic of where the majority of your flu deaths comes from. These people will have trouble fighting off any sickness.

I listened to the actual clip and the 80 percent appears to be in the context of those who are most at risk.

It’s still a worse case scenario. They’re straight extrapolating numbers from Wuhan’s population. Which is dumb. And then not carefully delineating what they’re doing.

That's what The OP was pointing out, That MSNBC is intentionally misstating estimates.
First they say 80% of U.S. population will survive, that implies that 20% of the population will die. Viewers are shocked by this, and don't listen to the rest, that contradicts what they just said.

It's said that way on purpose.

t now it’s a 4% death rate in US

22 deaths out of 546 confirmed

Trumps tweet about the common flu this morning wasn’t his best moment. I get his point but the death rate is 50 times higher than the common flu.

15 of those were in an old folks home. That's hardly representative of a true mortality rate.

The frick?

What was the last epidemic to have death rates like that? Cause it certainly wasn’t the Spanish Flu, which was the last major worldwide pandemic and only had about a 3% mortality rate.

Well at least Trump is establishing hard facts for us.

Everyone should agree that the flu killed 37,000 last year now.

Look, honestly not to cause a panic, but the true number of covid 19 cases is significantly higher than what we have. At least double to possibly as high as ten times the rate.

We just aren't testing the mild cases yet. And outside off a nursing home talking care of a large number of frail patients who actually are dnr and will not be treated for anything, the death rate is low.

There is no government or administration on this planet, past, present, or future that can stop the spread of this virus. It's going to run it's course until its done, or until there is a vaccine for it. And the reason for that is, you can't govern human nature. People are not self aware enough, and will not self quarantine to the extreme needed to keep from either getting infected, or spreading it to other people.
