So if they just up and decided to gratuitously take this guy down, they didn't bother to make the other two deceased get out of the line of fire? Or worse yet, "sacrificed" the other two for the purpose of a more solid self-defense claim?

True, unfortunately. In fact, now that you mention it, I bet it's a foregone conclusion that a fairly widely publicized GoFundMe account will happen, if it hasn't already. Which that wouldn't bear fruit unless he's (and by extension she) a perceived victim.
