WGAS how "weather resistant" they were if they couldn' hold up in this hurricane? Obviously not enough.
170 mph... a "hangar" that would have to be tall enough to move large aircraft yet strong enough to withstand that wind from any direction... doesn't exist.

So you think someone in emergency preparedness anticipates a worst case scenerio like this and just thinks "frick it,we know some of these F-22's will be grounded during a CAT 4 so lets not even think about doing some R&D to find out if hangars can be built to withstand these winds,we'll just let F-22's withstand millions and damage"
frick it, let's build a base in California with the earthquakes... frick it, let's build a base in Oklahoma where tornadoes can spin 180 mph... frick it, let's build this base 5 miles from a river where 40" of rain could flood everything

See where I'm going?

I bet this guy gets sacked. That was just plain irresponsible not to evacuate those aircraft ahead of the storm.

Eh, he's safe. TAF's are good for 30 hours. Considering the short ramp-up period of the storm, it likely was too short notice for anyone to be reprimanded. AFMAN's are god, after all.

Fact 1. You have no idea what the specs are for the hangers these 22 were placed in.

WGAS if they didnt hold up

From the article

quote:

Photographs show the hangars where F-22s were parked suffered severe damage.

quote:

You don't even know that millions of dollars in damage was done to the aircraft in question

Lets find out but Id guess repairs to the F 22's and rebuilding of the hangars will
be in the millions

You morons are unbelievable "cut the military budget, cut the military budget"

Not one of those

Hey why the frick weren't those planes in an underground lair that was category 5 hurricane proof?" also "shite why is every plane the US military owns always ready to fly?"

idiot

At Tyndall, one F-22 could be seen in aerial footage taken the morning after the storm struck. The empennage of the airplane was visible through the missing roof of a hangar where at least five QF-16 target drones and several propeller-driven aircraft had also been sheltered. One of the QF-16s appeared to be resting on top of another, and three more were apparently pushed together by wind or water. The F-22 was surrounded by debris.

A still photograph of another damaged hangar, circulating on the internet, showed an apparently intact F-22 within.

Well, that is not good.

Nice excuse but you do realize people can be flown in to clear house right? I have seen it, it happens... Piss poor preparation is the only excuse here...

This storm developed and hit within an eight day period. Do you really think something as sophisticated as a F-22 can be repaired so quickly as to make it safe for someone to risk their life to fly it? Do you know what percentage of repair was needed? Some of them could have needed as much as 50% repair. Common sense tells you that would take a considerable amount of time to get air worthy, especially when you're scrambling your arse off to get flyable planes out of harm's way in the meantime.

shite USAF shot their wad on the flying brick F-35, and couldnt maintain their F-22's. Oh well, karma is f'ing bitch, and now there going to have to buy new F-16 Block 70's, whether they want to or not, to counter the losses.

Yes it can. It's what even 4th generation fighters are designed for, quick repair for the majority of malfunctions. Particularly for safety of flight issues.

Probably so. As a matter of fact the officer in charge may have been a woman and she grounded them because the “service engine soon” light was on.

She would ground them because of that but try to fly them up to Andrews on an eighth of a tank of gas.

Do people realize that an F-22 can fly at nearly 1500 mph? Unless giant pieces of debris were slammed into them at 150-ish MPH they should all be recoverable.

They probably would've been better off moving them into the middle of a field and anchoring them down where any potential debris picked up would be as far away as possible, wouldn't they? I would think that an exterior and dome glass that can withstand 1500 mph is pretty damn stout and would take a big chunk of heavy debris to really hurt.

I don't know much about them but this seems like it would be a reasonable thought process right?

Instead of the Wing CO and Staff getting the hook, they'll blame it on the Supply Officer, because he's not a fighter jock.

Never seen a wide load escort? The planes are worth millions a piece. I'm sure the government could afford it.

Most of that land Northwest of Panama City is Eglin AFB. There are aux fields all over Eglin. I dont know the weights of a CH53 or a CH46, but with the engines/vert stabs removed, that short lift shouldve at least been tried, considering the costs per airframe.

How far will a Shithook haul a 30000 pound aircraft? Takes about 10 hours to pull two motors. A day minimum to pull wings. How many fixtures do u have for wings? Probably two per base maximum. Look the maintenance guys did the best they could.
