Reddit will ban r/The_Donald, r/ChapoTrapHouse, and about 2,000 other communities today after updating its content policy to more explicitly ban hate speech. The policy update comes three weeks after Black Lives Matter protests led several popular Reddit forums to go dark temporarily in protest of what they called the company’s lax policies around hosting and promoting racist content. It marks a major reversal for a company whose commitment to free expression has historically been so strong that it once allowed users to distribute stolen nude photos freely on the site.

Reddit’s new policy begins with a first rule that requires users to “consider the human.” It reads:

Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and people that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

Wow.

I’m a little bitter about only being 27. I feel like America and the world is about to go through a very rough patch of history.

I don't see a problem. This allows all the "progressive" nuts to be herded into one place where we can keep an eye on em.

The ones listed in the article are pretty bad. And the ones listed in the headline are a far right one and a far left one, both guilty of posting similar content to the really bad ones.

This isn’t “attacking conservatives” or anything like T_D people will claim.

I'm surprised that they went in both directions with the removals.

Doesn't this violate "browserwrap" policies that automatically force compliance by proxy from users?

Didn't Zappos lose this case in 2012?

No I went and read the list of names.

But seriously Reddit is an evil organization that is a massive trafficer of all kinds of bizarre pornography.

I wonder what percent of their traffic is due to the porn they have. I would love to see them apply these high moral standards to all of the random porn that’s been posted.
