Fox News - because CNN at al don’t seem to be covering it...

What is the answer for Puerto Rico? The US Democrats obviously want them as a state for political reasons.

There are corruption issues there that seem to be a part of the culture.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a Puerto Rico senator from the island’s ruling New Progressive Party for a second time in as many years, along with seven others in the latest corruption-related crackdown in U.S. territory, local media reported.

Abel Nazario, who represents an at-large district in Puerto Rico’s senate and previously served as mayor of the southern town of Yauco, had previously been arrested in September 2018 and charged with alleged payroll irregularities during his 2001-2017 tenure as Yauco’s mayor.

The El Vocero newspaper reported that the new arrests focused on the granting of contracts and payments to contractors who then undertook no work. Attempts to reach Nazario for comment were unsuccessful.

FBI spokesperson Limary Cruz-Rubio said that the San Juan office could confirm that 8 people were arrested without incident early Wednesday in different parts of the island and that the U.S. Attorney in Puerto Rico would issue a press release later with more details.

Puerto Rico’s senate president, Thomas Rivera Schatz, like Nazario a member of the New Progressive Party, asked Nazario to resign in a statement, saying that while he “recognized the presumption of innocence,” Nazario should “give up his seat and devote all his efforts to the situation he faces in court.”

What is the legal mechanism in Congress to divest the US of Puerto Rico? They are US citizens. Do you remove citizenship in the process?

He's been asked to resign before and he refuses. Get him out there and throw the book at him.

Clearly, the answer is Socialism. That will solve all of our problems.

Should have made it a state when we did Hawaii, and then we could have shaped it better economically and politically and made it a successful U.S. State. Too late now need to sell it to the highest bidder that is a US ally.

Better than that, just give it away. Will save us money in the long run. I really can't think of one ally that would want it that could afford to sustain it, that is.

At that point, why not just independence?

Good point, but then we will be blamed for the humanitarian crisis that ensues.

They still haven't recovered completely from Hurricane Maria, there would be a mass exodus to the U.S if they tried to found their own nation. They have already lost a large population (moving to mainland U.S) because of the hurricane.

Is that what the people of PR want or do they prefer to remain on a teat that some other government might provide them?

If one looks to history, it's the former. I know it's cool to say "hey the Puerto Ricans are happy to mooch off of us" but the reality is that the US has always been in the driver's seat with respect to determining PR's status. When there was a greater appetite for independence, the US government actively worked with some of the locals to stamp it out. You reap what you sow.

Now, the US isn't to blame for the local government's corruption and incompetence, but you certainly can't blame the people of Puerto Rico for being divided on the matter of status. That's a matter of policy--the same policy which arguably encouraged over-reliance.
